In Intense Competition Students Show Off Knowledge

March 22, 2005 – Ivanna Eudora Kean, Bertha C. Boschulte and the Calvary Christian Academy were crowned territorial champions in the third annual V.I. History, Civics, Geography and Juvenile Rights Quiz Bowl held Monday in St. Croix. The contest pitted student teams against one another in multiple formats testing their knowledge of V.I. history, civics, geography and juvenile rights. The St. Thomas schools bested their Crucian counterparts in the elementary, junior high and high school levels.
At the high school level St. Croix Central High placed second, and the St. Croix Educational Complex came in third. In the junior high level, All Saints Cathedral School placed second and Arthur A. Richards Junior High took third place. At the elementary level, All Saints Cathedral School came in second, while the Eulalie Rivera Professional Development School followed in third place.
Each team had participated in earlier island-wide contests, and on Monday competed as five-member groups with alternates ready to step in if the going got rough. At stake were an array of trophies, other valuable prizes and, of course, bragging rights.
In the intense high school level competition, CHS emerged from round one in first place with 100 points. Complex and IEK were tied for second place with 90 points each and CAHS trailed in third with 80 points. In the lightening round IEK pulled out all the stops and overtook the competition, ending up a clear winner with 140 points. Complex and CHS tied for second with 110 points a piece, and CAHS racked up 100 points.
IEK and BCB winning coaches, Fay Richardson and Sigurd Petersen, credited hard work and dedication as their key to victory. "This was our third time competing and our first win," Richardson said of the IEK team. "The kids have to be dedicated," Petersen said. He said his students study for the competition every day at lunchtime and the last block of the day.
IEK team members included Blanche Letang, Chelcy Angol, Jedidah Morrell, Sandy Bellot and Jenae Richardson. BCB team members were Allan George, Charles Brown, Reneé Hanley, Jenne Bougouoneau and Jeranna Augustine.
Calvary Christian Academy team members were Lance Smith, Olani Beltou, Davian Stevens, Hunter Hyde and Ezra Carty.
Other schools participating were the Charlotte Amalie High School, Evelyn Williams School, and St. Patrick’s School.
