Mar. 2, 2005 –Addelita Cancryn Junior High Schools students were evacuated from the school about 10:15 Wednesday morning as gas fumes were reported to be disrupting classes.
Ahmed Popo, assistant principal, said he went across the street to Gottlieb's Gas Station to investigate the fumes. The underground gas tanks were open, Popo said, because the Environmental Protection Agency was testing the air quality. Popo asked them to shut the tanks, which they did. The agency said it would resume the testing over the weekend.
Meantime, William Frett, insular school superintendent, had ordered the school to be evacuated. The students filed down Rue Honduras to the Joseph Aubain ball park, only to be given the all clear to return to the school minutes after arriving. "Fire marshall Francis gave the all clear to return," Popo said, "the air is clear."
Avery Evans, also an assistant principal, said the students were back in class by 11: 37 a.m., and "everything is normal."
In 2001 and 2003, Cancryn experienced outbreaks of phoned in bomb threats., which is what Wednesday's incident first appeared to be onlookers said, when the student body marched through Frenchtown Wednesday morning.
