Deadline Approaching for Hovensa Scholarship Application

March 2, 2005 — The deadline for applications for the Hovensa L.L.C. Scholarship Program is March 15. In a release from the refinery, Alexander Moorhead, Hovensa vice president said the Hovensa Scholarship Program is open to all seniors enrolled in a high school in the Virgin Islands who have maintained a grade average of "B" (3) or higher and have resided in the Virgin Islands for at least 15 years prior to the date of their application—or whose parent have been residents for at least 15 years immediately prior to that date.
Moorhead said the scholarships are awarded based on evidence of good character, scholastic achievement, and the financial need of the applicants.
The scholarship award can be as much as $2,000 per year for a student who will attend the University of the Virgin Islands or $4,000 for a student who will attend an accredited U.S. college or university outside of the V.I.
A scholarship continues for up to four years provided that the recipient continues enrollment as a full-time student at an accredited college or university and maintains good academic standing at the institution, Moorhead said.
"Preference will be given to students who will pursue a degree in chemical, mechanical or electrical engineering, which are degrees which are most frequently a requirement for professional entry level positions at Hovensa." Moorhead said.
Scholarship applications are available from the guidance counselor's office at all high schools in the V.I.
