Zuber 'Tuffs' Out 8.3 Miles to Take First Place – Again

Feb. 26, 2005 –– For the second year in a row, St. John resident Jeremy Zuber sped across the 8 Tuff Miles finish line first. His time was 50 minutes 2 seconds, a half minute more than his time of 49:32 last year. His 2004 time stands as the course record.
Cheryl Jamerinio, 30, of St. Thomas took the first place honors for the women with a time of 1:03:51. She is a nurse at Roy L. Schneider Hospital.
A total of 617 people registered to run, up from 515 the previous year.
Zuber, 24 and a Caneel Bay Resort winter employee, was just coming off a bad bout of flu, but rallied in time for the Saturday race to best Dai Roberts, a 43-year-old member of the British Royal Navy from Marlow, England.
The two were very close, but Zuber bested Roberts' 50:23 time on the 8.375-mile course from Cruz Bay to Coral Bay by 21 seconds.
"I would catch Jeremy on the downhill, but every uphill he pulled away," Roberts said.
Zuber said he beat Roberts in the last half mile.
"I said 'let's take him our right now when he was hurting from the hill,'" Zuber said.
Third in the men's division went to St. John resident Mike Dugan with a time of 55:05. The 31-year-old bartender said this was the first time he raced.
"The weather was perfect," he said.
The weather may have been perfect –– cloudy and cool –– when the first runners made it to Coral Bay, but those at the end of the pack ran in rain and heavy mist.
"Like 'Gorillas in the Mist,'" St. John runner Chris Meyer said.
Jamerino agreed that the air was thick.
"And the course is always tough and challenging," she said.
She said the hill before Reef Bay was really tough for her.
St. John resident Mauri Elbel, 24, a reporter for "Tradewinds Newspaper," was second across the finish line with a time of 1:04:38.
Elizabeth Conklin, a 29-year-old sailing instructor at the Ritz-Carlton Hotel on St. Thomas, finished third in the women's division. She ran the course in 1:08:18.
"I train a lot on the hills, but I had a side ache on the downhills," she said.
In the walker's division, St. John resident J. Brion Morrisette, 48, of St. John was first for the men with a time of 1:41:47. Corey Ringh, 26, of St. Thomas, was first for the women with a time of 1:42:48.
The fourth-place finisher in the women runners division, Karen Ringheiser, 41, was one of many who timed their vacation to coincide with the race. The Carlisle, Mass. stay-at-home mom said she first heard about the race during a stay last year at Maho Bay Camps. Since this was her children's winter break, the timing was perfect to return.
Pat Bowler, a 41-year-old certified public accountant from Virginia Beach, Va., came with a group of friends to participate.
"We don't go anywhere unless there's a race," he said.
Dan Blood, 43, an investment banker from Greenwich, Conn., said he was staying at Caneel Bay Resort when he saw a poster announcing the race.
John Folmsbee, 36, ran the race for the first time. The St. Thomas business manager said the rain produced a couple of "risky" spots on the course, but he navigated around the slick oily patches by watching for the sheen.
Here are the top three winners by age group.
