Black History Month Program to Explore ‘Life and Times of Enid Baa’ Feb. 25
A program highlighting the life and times of storied Virgin Islands librarian Enid Marie Baa will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 25, at Chase Auditorium (B-110) on UVI's St. Thomas campus. The guest speaker will be Lorraine Baa-Elisha. The presentation is sponsored by The African Diaspora Youth Development Foundation.
Abernathy to Speak at Panel Discussion on Saturday, Feb. 26
The Reverend Ralph David Abernathy III will be the featured guest at a panel discussion titled "Global Race Relations" on the University of the Virgin Islands St. Thomas campus. The panel discussion will be held from 10 a.m. to noon on Saturday, Feb. 26, in the Chase Auditorium (room B-110). Abernathy III is the eldest son of American civil rights leader the Rev. Ralph Abernathy, Sr. Abernathy III is a former Georgia state senator and serves as an associate pastor at the West Hunter Baptist Church in Atlanta.
Along with Abernathy, other panelists include UVI Political Science Professor Dr. Malik Sekou and Khalil Osiris. Osiris is a professor at Wright State University's College of Education in Dayton, Ohio. He is the co-author of the book "Psychology of Incarceration."
UVI Social Work Professor Dr. Adelle Belle will be the moderator. The panel discussion is free and open to the general public. The event is sponsored by UVI, John's Folly Learning Institute and the Beyond Visions Foundation. For more information call Osiris at 714-7134.
Dr. Stan Latesky to Present March 1 VI-EPSCoR Science Lecture March 1
The next lecture in the VI-EPSCoR Science series will be presented by Dr. Stan Latesky at noon on Tuesday March 1. The lecture will originate in Teacher Education room 101, with a videoconference link to Evans Center room 713 on St. Croix. The topic of day will be: "Synthesis, Spectroscopic Characterization, and Binding Studies of Lanthanide and Actinide Complexes Containing an Anionic Tripodal Kl Type Ligand." The 2005 EPSCoR lecture series is free and open to the public. It continues at noon on Tuesdays through April 26. In the lectures, UVI and visiting scientists present results from their original research. The series is presented by the VI-Experimental Program to Stimulate Competitive Research (EPSCoR) program. UVI Plans March 1 Symposium on Status of Freedom Since 9/11
In conjunction with its spring 2005 production of George Orwell's 1984, the UVI Theatre is hosting a symposium from 12:30 to 1:45 p.m. on Tuesday March 1, in the UVI Little Theatre on the second floor of the CA Building on the St. Thomas campus. The symposium subject is: "Have Our Freedoms Diminished since 9/11?" Participants will include UVI Professors Rosalie Dance, Camille McKayle, Lonnie Hudspeth and Roy Watlington. Participation by all, including students, is encouraged.
UVI to Offer Seminar to Seniors on Homeownership
The University of the Virgin Islands has joined more than 27 other Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) across the nation to help make homeownership a reality for its graduates. UVI will offer the Student Homeownership Opportunity Program (SHOP) at 5:15 p.m. on March 1, in Chase Auditorium (B-110) on St. Thomas and Evans Center 401 on St. Croix. St. Thomas Campus 'Languages' Celebration Free Films Continue March 2
The Humanities Division's Modern Languages Area on UVI's St. Thomas campus continues its celebration of "2005: The Year of Languages" with free foreign films each Wednesday at 9 p.m. in Chase Auditorium (B-110). Upward Bound Alumni Invited to Join in Anniversary Activities
UVI's Upward Bound program will celebrate its 40th anniversary in 2006. All Upward Bound alumni are invited to be part of the anniversary activities. More than 4,000 students have participated in the Upward Bound Program. Meetings of the Upward Bound 40th Anniversary Planning Committee are planned on St. Croix from 10 a.m. to noon on Saturday, March 5, in Evans Center room 302A and on St. Thomas from 10 a.m. to noon on Saturday, March 12, in Classroom Administration Building room 302. Afternoon on the Green Committee Seeking Cooks and Volunteers
The UVI Afternoon on the Green Committee is seeking cooks and volunteers for the 16th anniversary Afternoon on the Green scheduled for noon to 5 p.m. on Sunday, March 6. If you're interested in preparing a dish or you have a valid health permit and are interested in volunteering to serve food, please call the UVI Institutional Advancement Component at 693-1040. UVI-Queen Mary Walk/Run Slated March 11
UVI's St. Croix campus invites alumni, students, faculty and the entire Virgin Islands community to participate in the fourth annual UVI-Queen Mary Highway 5K Walk/Run on Friday, March 11. The walk/run – featuring the theme: Run Or Walk With Me to Celebrate UVI's 43rd Anniversary – will serve as the kick-off to UVI's 2005 Charter Week Activities. The walk/run begins promptly at 6 a.m. (assembly time is 5:30 a.m.) in the K-Mart parking lot in Sunshine Mall. Participants will proceed along the Queen Mary Highway to the University's St. Croix campus, ending at approximately 8 a.m. The registration fee is $15 for adults and $12 for students and children. Participants will receive a commemorative T-shirt. Light refreshments will be provided on conclusion of the walk/run. Commemorative prizes will be awarded to the top finishers. Registration forms are available from the St. Croix campus Chancellor's Office. The V.I. Pace Runners organization is providing technical assistance. For more information call 692-4000.
Student Housing Office Relocated on St. Thomas Campus
The Student Housing Office on the St. Thomas campus will relocate to the Student Activities Center as of Friday, Feb. 25. The Student Activities Office will remain in the Student Affairs Building (until further notice). Student Affairs offers the following services: Mail Distribution; Student Affairs Lobby Service; and Clubs and Organizations Service. The full relocation of both offices (Student Housing Office and the Student Activities Office) and the opening of the relocated Student Activities Center will be announced shortly.
UVI Association of Black Accountants Announces Raffle Winners
UVI's St. Croix Chapter of UVI National Association of Black Accountants have announced the winners of the chapter's Valentine's Raffle: Brittney Depusoir –1st Prize: round-trip air ticket to St. Thomas; Monsita Diaz — 2nd Prize: dinner for two; Petra Matthews — 3rd Prize: Valentine's gift basket; Rufina Smith — 4th Prize: box of chocolate.
