Feb. 19, 2005 – Five triathlon races occur in the Virgin Islands each year. Organizers have set up a system so athletes can earn points and compete in an overall series competition.
The first race of the series, sponsored by Endurance Sports, is March 6. While there are actually two races on that day, a Try-a-Tri for beginners and the sprint distance race, only the results of the sprint race will count in the series competition.
The second race, April 4, is the West Is Best Triathlon now in its 17th year.
The third race in the series is May 2, the St Croix International.
The series then moves to St John with the Love City Triathlon.
The final race in the series is the Toyota Wall-to-wall Triathlon set for September.
Series winners are based on the combined results of the races. Athletes receive points for each race based on their finish position. First place earns 10 points, second place nine points, through the tenth place finisher who receives one point.
According to a press release from Endurance Sports, since some athletes participate in the Half Ironman, and some in the sprint race in the St Croix International points are allowed according to Virgin Island finishers.
In consideration of the fact that four of the races are on the island of St Croix, prizes will be given for the top non-St Croix finisher and the top non- St Croix finisher for males and females. The prizes will be free entry into all of the races for the following year, which has a value of over $200.
