Professional Day Focuses on No Child Left Behind

Feb. 17, 2005 — The Department of Education will host a territorial professional development activity focused on bringing the department in line with federally mandated requirements of the No Child Left Behind Act. The bi-annual professional development will be from 7:45 a.m. to 3 p.m. Friday, Feb. 25. All public schools in the territory will be closed for the day.
"This second territory-wide activity provides principals, teachers, paraprofessionals, counselors, nurses, coordinators, and other allied school personnel with appropriate strategies and assessment measures to prepare us for implementation of NCLB," said Commissioner Dr. Noreen Michael. "The training being offered on the 25th expands and ties together all professional development offered up this point through the individual schools and districts."
The program entitled, "Preparing for NCLB: Strategies for Coping," recognizes ongoing professional development and enhanced teacher quality as two of several requirements districts must meet to be in compliance with this act.
Presenters will include representatives from Learning Point Associates, consultants to the department's Continuous Improvement Process, UVI, Department of Education district coordinators and supervisors, select public school teachers, literacy Coaches, textbook consultants and American Federation of Teachers Educational Research and Development trainers.
In the St. Thomas-St. John District, all activities will take place at the Bertha C. Boschulte Middle School campus. To relieve parking congestion participants are encouraged to park at the following schools: E. Benjamin Oliver and Joseph Gomez Elementary and Ivanna Eudora Kean High schools. Buses will be available for easy shuttles to Bertha C. Boschulte beginning at 7 a.m. The St. Croix training session will be held at the St. Croix Educational Complex.
