@Work: Yoga in Paradise

Feb. 15, 2005 – Most St. John residents know Lori Walden as a busy Town and Country real estate broker, but she has another work life that's making waves on St. John and beyond.
Walden, 36, is a certified yoga instructor who recently came out with her first DVD, "Yoga in Paradise."
She began practicing yoga when she was pregnant with her son, Thomas, now 6. After years of success selling real estate, she realized she wanted to do something else other than spend all her working days in an office or showing houses to prospective clients.
"One day I was doing yoga and thought, 'wouldn't this be nice?'" Walden said.
She decided to head off to the Kripalu Center for Yoga and Health near Lenox, Mass., for yoga teacher certification. The class lasted 200 hours over four weeks.
Life continued at its usual St. John pace with Walden selling real estate part time and holding yoga classes on the deck of her Concordia home. However, a chance meeting with someone who had once bought a house from her expanded her horizons.
It turned out the former client, Jeff Clabaugh, was in the business of making DVDs through his Blue Tang Productions and had recently done one for a yoga teacher in Maryland. Walden said he convinced her that she should come out with a DVD.
The DVD was filmed at Little Cinnamon Beach on St. John's north shore.
Walden, a Clifton, N.J., native, moved to St. John in 1992. She first visited with a family she met through a babysitting job.
"I moved back here six months later, but never planned to stay," she said.
She soon found a job managing a vacation villa, met her husband, Brian, got married and immersed herself in St. John life.
Walden continues to hold yoga classes on her deck, works two mornings a week at Town and Country's Coral Bay office, and spends the rest of her working time a home office that comes complete with a stunning view of Hurricane Hole and beyond.
As for the future, she'll keep up with her yoga classes, continue to sell real estate and work on plans to build another house big enough for a yoga studio.
