Celebration of Organic Act to Begin with Radio Show on Feb. 11
The Ad Hoc Committee on the 50th Anniversary of the Revised Organic Act has scheduled its first public activity – an appearance by committee member Dr. Malik Sekou on The Afternoon Mix radio program at 4 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 11. The Afternoon Mix is hosted by Raul Carrillo on WVWI Radio One (1000 AM). A news release is available on the UVI web site – www.uvi.edu.
St. Croix Campus Black History Month Activities

St. Thomas Campus SGA Organizes 'Dress Alike Week'
In an effort to encourage school spirit, the Student Government Association (SGA) on UVI's St. Thomas Campus has organized a "Dress Alike Week" beginning on Monday, Feb. 14. The association is encouraging all members of the UVI community – including faculty and staff – to show their colors during the week by wearing a shirt or blouse based on the following color scheme: Monday, Feb. 14 — Red; Tuesday, Feb. 15 — Orange; Wednesday, Feb. 16 — Grey; Thursday, Feb. 17. — Blue; Friday, Feb. 18 — Yellow.
Freshman Center on St. Thomas Campus Offers Tutorial Services
The Freshman Center on University of the Virgin Islands' St. Thomas campus has announced that tutorial services are available in English, mathematics and Spanish. These services are free to UVI students and available Monday through Friday, from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. The Freshman Center is located on the first floor of the CA Building in Suite 118. UVI students are encouraged to take advantage of the opportunity for assistance. For details call Vivian Bailey at 693-1226.
Estate Adventure Nature Trail Opens Feb. 11 on St. Croix
The V. I. Resource Conservation and Development Council (RC&D) has announced the grand opening of the Estate Adventure Nature Trail at 10 a.m. on Friday, Feb. 11, at the trailhead off Queen Mary Highway across from the VI Department of Agriculture. Interested teachers and students, as well as members of the general public, are encouraged to participate in the ribbon-cutting ceremony and/or hike a portion of the trail. Individuals from UVI's Agricultural Experiment Station are among the many community groups that provided volunteer assistance in building the trail. St. Thomas Class of 2005 to Meet Sunday, Feb. 13
The University of the Virgin Islands St. Thomas campus Class of 2005 will meet at 3 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 13, in the Chase Auditorium, room B 110. 'Languages' Celebration Continues Feb. 14 with 'Love in Any Language'
The Humanities Division's Modern Languages Area on UVI's St. Thomas campus continues its celebration of "2005: The Year of Languages" with an exploration of love and romance in many cultures at 5:30 p.m. on Monday, Feb. 14 in the UVI Little Theatre, in the CA Building. The session is titled "Love in Any Language." Along with student poetry, the evening will feature a look at romantic traditions in Polish, French, Dominican, Jewish, Chilean, Mexican, Arabic, Stwana (Botswanan) and Chinese cultures. Free foreign film screenings are also featured as a major part of the on-going celebration. Films are scheduled for Wednesdays at 9 p.m. in Chase Auditorium (B-110). VI-EPSCoR Spring Science Seminar Series Continues Feb. 15
Dr. Stephen Ratchford, UVI assistant professor of marine biology, will present the second seminar in the spring 2005 VI-EPSCoR Science Series from noon to 1 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 15. Dr. Rachford's topic will be "The influence of chemical communication on shelter selection and aggregation among spiny lobsters." The lecture will originate in Chase Auditorium (Business Education Room 110) on UVI's St. Thomas campus and be videoconferenced to Evans Center Room 713 on the St. Croix campus. The 2005 EPSCoR lecture series, which is free and open to the public, will continue at noon on Tuesdays through April 26. In the lectures, UVI and visiting scientists present results from their original research. The series is presented by the VI-Experimental Program to Stimulate Competitive Research (EPSCoR) program. UVI's Upward Bound to Plan for 40th Anniversary Celebration
UVI's Upward Bound program will celebrate its 40th anniversary in 2006. All Upward Bound alumni are invited to attend the first meetings of the 40th Anniversary Planning Committee. Meetings are scheduled from 10 a.m. to noon on Saturday, Feb. 12, in the Cafetorium on the St. Croix campus and in the Sports and Fitness Center on the St. Thomas campus. The agenda includes nominating committee officers and creating a directory of Upward Bound alumni. St. Croix Health Services to Sponsor Forum on Sex and Sexuality Feb. 16
The Health Services on UVI's St. Croix campus will sponsor an open forum discussion on the topic: "Let's Talk About Sex — Sex and Sexuality Then and Now" from 1 to 3 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 16, in the campus Cafetorium. The forum is free and open to the public. The forum, which is part of the St. Croix campus's Black History Month activities, will be followed with a free screening of two Spike Lee movies on Friday, Feb. 18. "School Daze" and "She's Got to Have It" will begin at 7 p.m. in the UVI Cafetorium. For more information, call the Health Services Office at 778-1620 extension 3314.
UVI's Afternoon on the Green Set for March 6; Cooks and Volunteers Needed
The grounds of the Herman E. Moore Golf Course on the University of the Virgin Islands St. Thomas campus will be alive with food and family fun from noon to 5 p.m. on Sunday, March 6th, when UVI celebrates its 16th Afternoon on the Green. Cooks, as well as general volunteers, are being sought. If you're interested in preparing a dish or you have a valid health permit and are interested in volunteering to serve food, please call the UVI Institutional Advancement Component at 693-1040.
UVI-Queen Mary Walk/Run Slated March 11
UVI's St. Croix campus invites alumni, students, faculty and the entire Virgin Islands community to participate in the fourth annual UVI-Queen Mary Highway 5K Walk/Run on Friday, March 11, 2005. The walk/run featuring the theme: Run Or Walk With Me to Celebrate UVI's 43rd Anniversary – will serve as the kick-off to UVI's 2005 Charter Week Activities. The walk/run begins promptly at 6 a.m. (assembly time is 5:30 a.m.) in the K-Mar
t parking lot in Sunshine Mall. The registration fee is $15 for adults and $12 for students and children. Participants will receive a commemorative T-shirt. St. Croix Alumni Chapter Elects Six to 2005 Executive Council
The University of the Virgin Islands Alumni Affairs Office has announced the election of executive council officers for the UVI Alumni Association's St. Croix Chapter. Elected to the 2005 council were: Jerraine Wynter ('96) – president; Marthious Clavier ('02) – vice president; Karen Jones ('02) – recording secretary; Ann Thomas ('03) corresponding secretary; Alexander Elizee ('01) – treasurer; and Nestor Ramon, Jr. ('05) – sergeant at arms/parliamentarian. UVI Alumni Affairs Announces Chartering of South Atlantic Chapter
The University of the Virgin Islands Alumni Affairs Office has announced the chartering of the UVI Alumni Association South Atlantic Chapter. The South Atlantic Chapter, which is based in Georgia, also covers the states of Tennessee, North Carolina, South Carolina and Alabama. The chapter contact person is Imani Marley-Husbands ('96).
