UVI's 16th Afternoon on the Green Set for March 6; Cooks and Volunteers Needed
The grounds of the Herman E. Moore Golf Course on the University of the Virgin Islands St. Thomas campus will be alive with food and family fun from noon to 5 p.m. on Sunday, March 6th, when UVI celebrates its 16th Afternoon on the Green. Cooks, as well as general volunteers, are being sought. If you're interested in preparing a dish or you have a valid health permit and are interested in volunteering to serve food, please call the UVI Institutional Advancement Component at 693-1040.
St. Croix Campus Writing Center Schedules Open House
The Writing Center on UVI's St. Croix campus will conduct an open house for the UVI community from Jan. 31 through Feb. 4. The center is located in Room 104 of the Modular Building, which overlooks the campus tennis and basketball courts. Open house hours will be daily, from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. For more information, call the center at at 692-3033.
'Year of Languages' Celebration Continues with Film on Feb. 2
The Humanities Division's Modern Languages Area on UVI's St. Thomas campus continues its celebration of "2005: The Year of Languages" with a showing of the German film "Goodbye Lenin" at 8 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 2, in Chase Auditorium. UVI's Little Theatre Sets Auditions for Spring Production on Feb. 3-4
The Little Theatre at the University of the Virgin Islands St. Thomas campus has scheduled auditions from 7 to 9 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 3, and Friday, Feb. 4, for its upcoming spring production of George Orwell's "1984." Orwell's play depicts the horrors of man's fate in a society where Big Brother is always watching. A cast of 14 is needed. Auditions will take place in the UVI Little Theatre, on the second floor of the Classroom Administration Building. For further information call Dennis E. Parker at 693-1341.
Symposium on Haiti Set Feb. 4 for UVI's St. Thomas and St. Croix Campuses
UVI's Reichhold Center will sponsor a public symposium on Haiti, its revolution and current circumstances on Friday, Feb. 4. The symposium is scheduled in conjunction with a Virgin Islands performance by the Haitian musical group Strings on Feb. 5. Participants in the free symposium will include UVI instructors Dr. Malik Sekou, Dr. Vincent Cooper, Gene Emanuel and Dr. Evelyn Lallemand.
The symposium will originate at 7 p.m. in Chase Auditorium (B-110) on the St. Thomas campus. It will be videoconferenced to Evans Center Room 713 on the St. Croix campus and also to Teacher Education Room 101 on St. Thomas. For details contact the Reichhold Center at 693-1563.
Seminar on Developments in Plant Transformation Set on Feb. 2
A seminar entitled "Developments in Plant Transformation" is scheduled for noon on Wednesday, Feb. 2, in Evans Center Room 401 on UVI's St. Croix campus, with a videoconference link to Teacher Education Room 115 on the St. Thomas campus. Dr. Krit Raemakers, from the Department of Plant Sciences at Wageningen University in The Netherlands will be the presenter.
Dr. Raemakers is the developer of the genetically engineered plants used in the first transgenic cassava field trials in the world. These trials are located at the UVI Agricultural Experiment Station on the St Croix campus. Dr. Raemakers collaborates with UVI Prof. Dr. Thomas Zimmerman on this work. Genetic engineering in plants involves inserting foreign DNA to induce new traits such as disease and herbicide resistance, improved nutrition and edible vaccines, as well as using existing DNA to affect desirable modifications in development and quality.
The seminar is free and open to the UVI community and the general public. It is sponsored by the Biotechnology and Agroforestry Program of UVI's Agricultural Experiment Station. For more information contact Dr. Zimmerman at 692-4074.
'Personnel Handbook' Seminar Offered by SBDC on Feb. 2 on St. Thomas
UVI's Small Business Development Center will conduct a seminar entitled "Personnel Handbook" from 10 a.m to noon on Wednesday, Feb. 2, at the UVI-Small Business Development Center Training Facility at Nisky Center on St. Thomas. The presenter will be Kevin A. Rodriquez, director of the Division of Personnel for the Government of the U.S. Virgin Islands. The seminar will provide basic information on personnel handbook standards for entrepreneurs and employers. Pre-registration is required. Admission is $20. A $5 discount will be given attendees who indicate how they learned about the seminar. For details or to pre-register, call 776-3206.
Humanities Film Society Presents 'La Vie Est Belle' on Feb. 4
The UVI Humanities Division Film Society will present the French film "La Vie Est Belle" at 6 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 4, at the Theater (Evans Center Room 401) on the St. Croix Campus. "La Vie Est Belle," starring music legend Papa Wemba, takes viewers inside the vibrant music scene of Kinshasa, Zaire. In the lively farce, directors Ngangura Mweze and Benoit Lamy tell the story of a poor musician who seeks love, respect and fame in the big city. Demonstrating a different side of African cinema, the film runs approximately 85 minutes and features English subtitles. Admission is free and a discussion will follow the screening. St. Thomas Class of 2005 Sets Meeting on Class Speakers, Photos and Rings
The University of the Virgin Islands St. Thomas campus Class of 2005 will meet on Sunday, Feb. 6, to select a class speaker, take yearbook pictures and meet with a representative to order class rings. The meeting times and places are as follows:
1-3 p.m. — A representative from Jostens will be available in front of the Ralph M. Paiewonsky Library for class members who would like to order class rings. Deposits will be accepted.
3 p.m. — The class will meet in the Chase Auditorium, room B 110, to select a class speaker. All graduates interested in being the class speaker should prepare a two-minute speech to present to the class.
3:30-5:30 p.m. — Yearbook pictures will be taken in the Cooperative Extension Service building.

Deadline to Apply for 2005 UVI Graduation is Feb. 7
The last day for University of the Virgin Islands students to apply for graduation in 2005 is Monday, Feb. 7. Other academic deadlines are available on the UVI web site – www.uvi.edu.
