John de Jongh Is Right About Cruise Ships for St. Croix

Dear Source:
I am happy that John de Jongh has broken his silence and respect the reasons he provided in his recent editorial. Most of us have been here long enough to know what the issues are that confront our various communities. We also know to a certain extent the solutions that can help move us forward. Yet there is seemingly a prevailing attitude that if we ignore something long enough it will go away. Let's block it out of our minds, not talk about it, and it will go away. John's letter highlights a growing problem in our islands of not holding people accountable. You are hired to do a job, your goals are established, so why aren't you doing your job? Why are you not being held accountable?
I do not share in the sentiment that cruise ship business for St. Croix is the solution. It may be a sign of hope, but it is a short-term fix; yet if that is the direction the people of St. Croix want to take I believe those wishes should be respected. This cruise ship agreement story is playing like a broken record. Finger pointing will not help address or move this stalemate. There needs to be better accountability from all leaders in all departments.
St. Croix and its people need to start talking with one voice to move in one direction. The needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few; it takes only a handful of individuals to derail progress. Let's face it: There are many in St. Croix that march to the beat of a different drum and will not respect the wishes of the majority, they sow the seed of hatred, and seek to divide, to drive a wedge so that the roots of progress and opportunity can't take hold in the fertile soil of St. Croix. This must stop.
All of us can greet, smile, and serve on another better. Let us all take that extra effort to go above and beyond the call of duty in our everyday lives and our jobs to build our economies and provide opportunities for all residents to prosper. The cup is never half empty, it's always half full and with that being said, I look to our leaders to do what is necessary to provide opportunities for its citizens to prosper.
John, it's good to see you take your gloves off!
