UVI to Close for Thanksgiving, Fortsberg/Discovery Day – Nov. 25 and 26
Happy Thanksgiving to the UVI community. Both campuses of the University of the Virgin Islands will be closed this Thursday and Friday, Nov. 25 and 26, in observance of Thanksgiving Day and Fortsberg/Discovery Day, respectively.
UVI Paradise Jam Women's Division Games Set Nov. 25 to 27
UVI's fifth annual Paradise Jam NCAA Division I basketball tournament continues this Thursday through Saturday, Nov. 25-27, with the women's round at the Sports and Fitness Center on the St. Thomas campus. The 14 games in the women's round begin at 4:30 p.m. on Thursday, with Rutgers taking on South Dakota State. Tournament rosters and schedules are available on the UVI Athletic Department's web page – http://www.uvi.edu/pub-relations/athletics/paradise_jam_04.html.
The web page also includes photos from men's round action, including a team shot of the Paradise Jam 2004 men's champions, the Arkansas Razorbacks. The women's division consolation and championship games will also be televised live nationally by Fox College Sports on Saturday, Nov. 27.
Paradise Jam Tickets
Tickets are on sale now, with all UVI students eligible for $5 tickets if they are purchased at the St. Thomas campus Bookstore. Regular admission is $10 for VI residents (with ID); $40 for non-VI residents; and $5 for persons age 5 to 17. Tickets are also available at Modern Music (Havensight) Parrot Fish (Back Street) The Rack (Tutu Park) and Nisky Pharmacy. Oliver Samuels and Company Return to the Virgin Islands Nov. 25-27
The Reichhold Center for the Arts presents Oliver Samuels and Company in Patrick Brown's hilarious comedy "Guava Jelly" over this holiday weekend.
Samuels and Company will perform on St. Croix at the Island Center for the Performing Arts on Thursday, Nov. 25, and on St. Thomas at the Reichhold Center for the Arts on Friday, Nov. 26, and Saturday, Nov. 27. 'Coal Carriers of St. Thomas' Subject of Nov. 28 Lecture
The UVI community is invited to a lecture presentation by Per Nielsen, an instructor at the University of Copenhagen, on Sunday, Nov. 28, at 2 p.m. in UVI's Chase Auditorium. Nielsen's topic will be "The Coal Carriers of St. Thomas." The lecture, which is free, is presented by the St. Thomas Historical Trust and sponsored by West Indian Company (WICO). SBDC Sets Business Seminars for Nov. 29 and 30 on St. Thomas
The UVI Small Business Development Center (SBDC) will conduct two seminars focusing on starting a business on Monday, Nov. 29 and Tuesday, Nov. 30. The Monday seminar covers business registrations. Tuesday's seminar will focus on business licenses and zoning. Both sessions will run from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Small Business Development Center Training Facility on St. Thomas. The seminars are designed for business owners, students and employees. Admission is $20 for each. Those who pre-register will receive a 25 percent discount. UVI and high school students (with I.D.) and UVI employees are admitted free. They must, however, pre-register. To pre-register or for more information, call 776-3206 from Monday to Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
Wastewater Treatment Workshop Set Dec. 6-7; Signup Deadline Nov. 30
UVI's Cooperative Extension Service will conduct a two-day Decentralized Wastewater Treatment Training workshop on Dec. 6 and 7 at the Small Business Development Center's Training Facility at Nisky Center on St. Thomas. The workshop is free, but participants must confirm attendance no later than Nov. 30. For more information call 693-1086.
