Nov. 14, 2004 – Look for the weather to start drying up Sunday night, but you'll still face intermittent showers at night and in the morning through Monday, Rafael Mojica, a meteorologist at the National Weather Service in San Juan, said Sunday morning.
"It's going to rain again," he said.
However, the territory should see drier and sunnier weather by Tuesday.
A combination of low pressure areas at various levels of the atmosphere has kept cloudy skies and rain showers in the area for the past week.
This weather system is pulling the moisture down from an area now about 300 to 400 miles north of St. Thomas and St. John.
Mojica confirmed what most residents are thinking – November is the territory's rainiest month. He said the average monthly rainfall for St. Thomas sits at 5.7 inches. For St. Croix, the number stands at 6.51 inches.
"St. Croix gets more rain," he said.
Not lately, however. For the period Nov. 1 through Saturday, St. Thomas had 3.97 inches of rain. St. Croix got 2.78 inches in the same period.
On Saturday, .89 inches of rain fell in St. Thomas, with St. Croix seeing .24 inches.
Kathy Demar, who manages vacation villas on St. John, said she had one couple check out after staying only the weekend when they learned rainy weather was ahead.
However, Demar said that the rest of her vacation villa guests fit in beach trips between the rain showers.
"Yes, it was raining, but they got out every day and did stuff," she said.
She said another couple returned for a free week at one of her villas because they had been rained out during last year's November downpours.
"And they said they had a great time," Demar said.
The territory is also under a coastal flood warning thanks to swells coming from the north-northeast and northeasterly winds. Breaking waves could reach 10 to 16 feet with seas running up to 11 feet.
High surf and small craft advisories remain in effect.
