Nov. 4, 2004 – About a dozen people enjoyed the skies over the south shore Wednesday night through the courtesy of the St. Croix Environmental Association.
Astronomy hobbyist Woody Montier and Rick Starr set up telescopes at the Boy Scout camp in the evening and gave anyone who came the opportunity to get intimate with the sky.
Montier's telescope was capable of 400x magnification. One hundred magnification would make the moon fill the whole sight area.
Some of the treats he offered up to the viewers who mostly came in family groups were a circle nebula, star clusters, the Seven Sisters of Pleiades and Andromeda.
The main attraction of the night was to be the Taurids Meteor Shower. It was estimated that there would be seven shooting stars per hour. However, the group, which did a lot of discussing of local politics and where to find the best vegetables, saw only two in the first hour and a half.
SEA will be going in another direction this weekend as it offers Advanced Snorkeling at Butler Bay. This will be led by an open water dive instructor and is for experienced snorkelers comfortable in the ocean. Cost is $10 for non-SEA members. Registration is required and can be done by calling Doug Timmons at 719-5273.
