Antilles School Triumphs in Coral Bay School Regatta

Oct. 31, 2004 – High-school sailing took another step forward in its growth as a U.S. Virgin Islands school-based sport when six teams from all three islands competed in the Coral Bay School Regatta on St. John, Oct. 30 and 31.
"Each high-school team on each island has been asked to host a regatta, so we decided to run the first one of this school year," said Dick Burks, regatta director.
Twenty-four sailors competed in fleet racing with two divisions, A and B. Three teams represented Antilles School on St. Thomas. There was one from the St. John School, one from Country Day on St. Croix, and the V.I. Home School team was made up of sailors from St. John and St. Croix.
Each team sailed a total of eight races on short windward-leeward courses under 10 to 15 knot winds and calm seas. Scores were posted for each division separately and for a combined overall.
The depth and experience of Antilles School sailors showed right from the start.
"We sailed smart and were consistent. Even though we didn't have the best starts, sailing smart helped us catch up," Cy Thompson, who skippered along with Rian Bareuther as crew, to a first place finish in Division A and Overall, said.
The pair earned a near flawless string of first-place bullets.
Leading Division B were Antilles sailors Andi Bailey and Mimi Roller. "We had all first place finishes the first day, except a third when a squall blew through and the wind died. Today, we scored all firsts again until the last race. That was when a big breeze blew through and we had to sheet out to avoid capsizing," Roller said.
Antilles Coach Rob Upson said he was proud of his sailors. "They sailed well and sailed smart. There was a lot of improvement in our up and coming sailors and our veteran sailors were very competitive, they continue to challenge one another," Upson said.
Steve Morgan Taylor, St. John School's athletic director and sailing coach, remarked: "It was great to see all the schools here."
Richard Baranowski, one of four St. John School sailing team members, said: "We have all sailed Lasers and Optis, but we haven't had as much practice in the 420s."
Meanwhile, Duane Minton, Country Day School coach, commented: "We have a young team, two eighth-graders and two ninth-graders, so there's a lot of room to grow."
Stephanie Malanga, who sailed for Country Day, said: "Our goal was to have fun. It was a learning experience for us."
Malanga's crew was Sidney Jones. The St. Croix team practices sailing after school at Jones Maritime in Christiansted.
A boon to future competitions, Jones' father, Rob Jones, is in the process of building a 24-foot trailer that will be able to fit four 420's, eight Lasers or 12 Optimists. "This will make it easier to transport boats between islands for regattas," Jones says.
The next high school 420 regatta will take place on St. Thomas.
