Dear Source,
Like most people, I was a complete idiot about what challenges our everyday world presents to the disabled. That is, until my mother had a stroke and landed, permanently, in a wheelchair. Even in Ohio, where there are rules everywhere about accommodating the disabled, every trip outside her house requires "special assistance."
It's amazing how little thought is given to just how someone in a wheelchair might hold open that (giant glass) door while they use their one good arm to maneuver their chair over that bump in the threshold…. you get the picture.
What a great role model Ms. Griggs is, and thanks to Molly Morris for another great lesson on life in the V.I.! I wish that our schools would teach a simple, one-month course somewhere in the early years, on daily life for the disabled. Believe me, we'd all rethink our homes and neighborhoods.
In an instant, your life can change, and it could be you wishing there wasn't that two-inch bump in the floor!
