UVI Alumni Association – St. Croix Chapter Sets Meeting for Oct. 15
The University of the Virgin Islands Alumni Association St. Croix Chapter invites all alumni and friends of alumni interested in becoming active members of the Association to the chapter meeting from 5:30 to 7 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 15. The meeting – which will include an election of chapter officers – will be held at the UVI St. Croix campus Theater (Evans Center Room 401). For details call 692-4023.
Ribbon-cutting Set Oct. 16 for St. Croix Campus Information Kiosk
The public is invited to a ribbon-cutting ceremony at the new St. Croix campus information kiosk at 8:30 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 16. UVI President LaVerne E. Ragster and members of the UVI Board of Trustees are expected to be present for the event. The St. Croix campus information kiosk will aid visitors by providing a listing of campus events, background information about the University, and a map of the St. Croix campus. UVI Board of Trustees to Meet Oct. 16 on St. Croix
The University of the Virgin Islands Board of Trustees will meet at 9 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 16, in the Research and Extension Center Building on the St. Croix campus. A full news release is available on the UVI Web site www.uvi.edu.
Prospective 2005 St. Croix Graduates Invited to Class Meeting on Oct. 17
A meeting for prospective 2005 graduates on UVI's St. Croix campus is scheduled for 3 to 5 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 17, in the Theatre (Evans Center Room 401). Representatives from the Academic Services Office will be on hand to provide pertinent information. All members of the 2005 class are encouraged to attend. Nominations and the elections of class officers will also be conducted at this meeting. For more information please contact class member LaVerne Sergeant at 713-8298.
UVI Students Invited to Business Division Lectures
The University of the Virgin Islands St. Thomas campus Business Division invites UVI students and members of the UVI community to attend the free lectures in its Fall Guest Lecture Series. Kibwe Belle, a research associate at Driehaus Capital Management L.L.C. and an alum of UVI, will provide a guest lecture on International Finance from 7 to 8:15 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 20, in Teacher Education Building Room 216. The lecture will be held during Prof. Keishiro Matsumoto's regularly scheduled Fundamentals of Finance course. Michelle Pierce, senior market research analyst for The Link Group, will provide a guest lecture on the topic "Statistics and Their Impact on Business Decisions" from 11a.m. to 12:15 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 28, in Business Education Room 102. The lecture will be held during instructor Eric Christian's regularly scheduled Business Statistics course.
UVI Students Invited to Join Accounting Association
All UVI students who are pursuing degrees in accounting and other business majors are encouraged to join the UVI Accounting Association, which is a student affiliated chapter of the National Association of Black Accountants (NABA). NABA offers a variety of benefits to young professionals, including exposure to current business related topics, job searches, motivational and instructional conferences, mentoring and networking. Interested students are encouraged to call Prof. Sharon Simmons on the St. Thomas campus at 693-1314 or Prof. Francisco Depusoiron on the St. Croix campus at 692-4113.
St. Thomas Campus Accounting Association Announces Raffle Winners
The UVI St. Thomas campus Accounting Association has announced the winners of a raffle drawing held on Oct. 4. Proceeds from the raffle and other fund-raising activities provided financial assistance for 12 students to attend the National Association for Black Accountants Student Southern Region conference held Oct. 7-9 in Atlanta, Ga.
The raffle winners are:
First – Adolph Rabsatt – round trip to Puerto Rico from Transportation Services, Inc.
Second – Kerry Drew – two-night stay at Gallows Point Resort
Third – Dave Verdant – Male Caterpillar watch from Royal Caribbean
Fourth – Mervin Taylor – AH RIISE gift basket
Fifth – Carlton Fraser – gift certificate for a manicure from Nailed in Paradise
Sixth – Willis C. Todman – lunch for two at Lillian's Caribbean Grill
Seventh – Felix Rivera – two tickets to Coral World
Eight – Cynthia Rabsatt – dinner for two at a St. John restaurant
Members of the association congratulate all the winners and thank all the contributors who assisted in their conference participation. They look forward to sharing their newly gained knowledge with students who were unable to attend the student conference in Atlanta.
St. Croix Campus Relay for Life Generates $1,560 in Cancer Contributions
The UVI St. Croix campus Relay for Life 2004 effort has generated $1,560 for the American Cancer Society, according to UVI team coordinator Sergeant Angel Santos, Jr., UVI's ROTC program instructor. This amount surpassed the 2003 effort, Santos said. And he noted that additional donations are expected. Santos expressed his thanks and that of St. Croix Chancellor Jennifer Jackson to all who participated or made contributions.
St. Croix Intramural Co-ed Volleyball League Results
Hit It Up narrowly defeated Hotshots in three close games in the St. Croix campus Intramural Co-ed Volleyball League on Wednesday, Oct 13. Game scores were: 25-23, 25-18 and 25-23. Top players for Hit It Up were Chanel Richards and Dennis Andrews. Top players for Hotshots were David Obando and Joeanna Reynolds-Dorigar. Co-ed Volleyball league play continues every Wednesday at 9 p.m. Games are played on the St. Croix campus outdoor volleyball courts. Next week, on Oct. 20, the Ace It Up squad takes on Dwayne's Team. Registration for Gemological Institute Course Extended to Oct. 20
The registration deadline for the upcoming Gemological Institute of America (GIA) Accredited Jewelry Professional Program course has been extended to Oct. 20. Interested individuals are asked to register as soon as possible. The GIA is offering this intensive course in conjunction with the University of the Virgin Islands Community Engagement and Lifelong Learning (UVI-CELL) Center. The five-day course will be held Oct. 25-29. To register, contact CELL at 693-1101. Individuals who enroll will receive a free one-year membership in the GIA Alumni Association's newly formed Caribbean Islands Chapter. St. Croix Campus Faculty Colloquium Scheduled Oct. 22
Prof. Valerie Combie, chair of the St. Croix campus Humanities Division, has announced a Faculty Colloquium will be held at 4 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 22, in the Theatre (Evans Center Room 401). Combie will discuss the mission and goals of the Writing Center. She will also outline methods of helping students better prepare for class and improve the content and style in their papers. Reichhold to Host Lorna Freeman and Puerto Rico Symphony Oct. 23

Articles Sought for 2005 V.I. Agrifest Bulletin
The VI Agriculture & Food Fair Board is once again soliciting articles of interest to the Virgin Islands community for publication in the 2005 V.I. Agrifest bulletin. The V.I. Agriculture and Food Fair is scheduled for Feb. 19-21, 2005
, at the Department of Agriculture Fair Grounds on St. Croix. The fair grounds are located north and west of UVI's St. Croix campus in Estate Lower Love. The theme for the fair is "Keeping Agriculture Alive Through Technology in 2005." The deadline for submission of articles is Friday, Oct. 29. Articles may be submitted to Kofi Boateng, executive vice president of the fair, to Errol Chichester in the Department of Agriculture, or to Faye Reed at the Commissioner of Agriculture's office. Articles will be accepted by e-mail, fax, diskette or hard copy. Send e-mail to Boateng at kboaten@uvi.edu, his fax number is 692-4085.
