St. Croix Campus Sets 'Volleyball Rumble' on Oct. 6
A "Volleyball Rumble" featuring co-ed teams entered in the St. Croix Campus Volleyball Intramural League is scheduled for 9 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 6 at the campus' outdoor volleyball court. All teams are asked to arrive on time for the round-robin, pre-league event. Final additions to a team's roster may be made at this time, according to Coach Bruce Wrey. St. Croix Sets Student Organization Awareness Day, SGA Installation for Oct. 6
A Student Clubs and Organizations Awareness Day and the 2004 Student Government Installation Ceremony are scheduled for Wednesday, Oct. 6, on UVI's St. Croix campus. Approximately 10 student clubs and organizations will be offering information about their activities and conducting membership drives between 11:30 a.m. and 6 p.m. in the Melvin Evans Center.
Student government installation ceremonies will be held at noon in the courtyard of the Melvin Evans Center. The day's keynote address will be delivered by Paul Fleming, executive director of the V.I. Lottery. Members of the student government to be installed include: President Thamrah Gomes, Vice President Onage Ghanie, Treasurer Gibran Braithwaite, and student senators Jasmine Buttolph (Senior); Ninafe Giron and Kim Phillip-St. Hall (Juniors); Carla Bastian and Chantal Connor (Sophomores); and Wendell Grouby, Jr. and Amilee Milestead (Freshmen). UVI Accounting Association to Conclude Fund Raisers on Oct. 5
The Accounting Association of the University of the Virgin Islands on the St. Thomas campus will conclude a series of fund raising activities on Tuesday, Oct. 5, with bake and snack sales in front of the Business Education Building from 3 to 5:30 p.m. The association is raising funds to assist with travel expenses for its members to attend the National Association of Black Accountants (NABA) Southern Student Conference in Atlanta, Ga. Woods Hole Researcher to Discuss 'Protected Areas on St. Croix' on Oct. 5
The Virgin Islands Marine Advisory Service (VIMAS) on St. Croix and the St. Croix Environmental Association (SEA) will sponsor a presentation on protected areas by Dr. Elizabeth Gladfelter at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 5, at the University of the Virgin Islands Cafetorium on the St. Croix campus. Dr. Gladfelter, former director of the West Indies Lab and currently affiliated with the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute, will present "Protected Areas on St. Croix: Personal Odysseys, Community Legacy." Conference to Focus on Legal Issues and Students with Mental Disorders
Members of the UVI community are invited to participate in an audio conference titled "Responding to Students with Mental Disorders: Law & Policy Issues," from 1 to 2:30 p.m. on Oct. 6 in Room 401 of the Evans Center on UVI's St. Croix campus. The conference will be presented – via audio link – by Gary Pavela, director of judicial programs at the University of Maryland, College Park. Pavela is also editor of national legal publications. The forum will cover: ADA's (Americans With Disabilities Act) "reasonable accommodation" requirements; how to better manage the classroom environment; best practices in defining and responding to classroom disruption and how to identify and evaluate factors contributing to student anxiety and depression. UVI Community Asked to Join in St. Croix Relay for Life; Sign-up Deadline Oct. 7
UVI St. Croix campus Chancellor Jennifer Jackson has issued a call to the entire UVI community to participate in the battle against cancer by joining in the 2004 Relay for Life on St. Croix. A deadline of 5 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 7, has been set for participants to register with the team and make their contributions, according to UVI's ROTC program enlisted instructor Sergeant Angel Santos, Jr. who is coordinating the University's 2004 effort.
Santos is encouraging UVI faculty, staff and students to join the team and to encourage their families and friends to also participate. Members of the UVI community interested in participating in a team, or those who wish to contribute financially to the effort, can contact Santos at 692-4101 or by e-mail to asantos@uvi.edu.
Sponsored by the American Cancer Society, the Relay is a fund raiser involving teams from throughout the Virgin Islands community. Team members raise funds — this year's overall goal is $100,000 — and participate in a 24-hour walk scheduled to start at 2 p.m. on Oct. 9, and continue through 2 p.m. on Oct. 10, at the St. Croix Educational Complex.
VI-EPSCoR Science Lecture on Prospects for Caribbean Coral Reefs Set Oct. 8
The prospects for coral reef recovery in the Caribbean will be the subject of a presentation at the University of the Virgin Islands from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 8, by Dr. Alina M. Szmant, a professor and researcher at the University of North Carolina at Wilmington.
The title of Dr. Szmant's presentation is: "The Ecology of Coral Recruitment: Larval behavior, dispersal, settlement and post-settlement survivorship." For more information on Dr. Szmant's work visit this web site.
Friday's presentation is part of the ongoing VI-EPSCoR Seminar Series of science lectures. The seminar will be held in Chase Auditorium (Business Education Room 110) on UVI's St. Thomas campus. It will be available on the St. Croix campus by videoconference in Evans Center Room 401. The series – which is free and open to the public – continues on Fridays through Nov. 19. It is hosted by UVI's Center for Marine and Environmental Studies, the Division of Science and Mathematics and VI-Experimental Program to Stimulate Competitive Research (EPSCoR). El Gran Combo to Open Reichhold Center for the Arts Season Oct. 9-10
The Reichhold Center for the Arts opens its 2004-2005 season with the Ambassadors of Latin Music, El Gran Combo, on Saturday, Oct. 9, at the Reichhold Center for the Arts on St. Thomas and on Sunday, Oct. 10, at Island Center for the Performing Arts on St. Croix. Screenings of 'Woman Thou Art Loosed' Set at Reichhold Center
The V.I. Department of Tourism will host film screenings featuring "Woman Thou Art Loosed," the latest work by director Michael Schultz, at 7:30 p.m. on Oct. 11 and 12, at the University of the Virgin Islands Reichhold Center for the Arts. Schultz, a seasoned veteran in the film industry, has directed films that include Cooley High, Car Wash and L.A. Law. A discussion session with the director – t
itled "An Evening with Michael Schultz" – will be conducted prior to the screenings.
The movie is an adaptation of Bishop T.D. Jakes' novel of the same name. It chronicles a woman's struggle to come to terms with her legacy of abuse, addiction and poverty. The cast includes Kimberly Elise, Loretta Divine, Michael Boatman and Bishop Jakes. There will also be a screening at 7:30 p.m. on Oct. 13 at the Educational Complex on St. Croix. Workshop on Domestic Violence/Child Abuse Set Oct. 12-14 on St. Croix Campus
A series of workshops on Domestic Violence and Child Abuse are planned at the University of the Virgin Islands St. Croix campus from Oct. 12 – 14. The sessions will be sponsored by the UVI's St. Croix campus Health Services Center and the Women's and Men's Coalition. Sessions will take place in the St. Croix campus Cafetorium on the following schedule:
– Tuesday, Oct. 12 — Time: 1 – 2:30 p.m. — Topic: Women and Domestic Violence
– Wednesday, Oct. 13 — Time: 10 – 11:30 a.m. — Topic: Men and Domestic Violence
– Thursday, Oct. 14 — Time: 1 – 2:30 p.m. — Topic: Child Abuse and Domestic Violence

St. Croix Plans 'St. Croix Votes – VI Election 2004' Forums Oct. 12-14
The University of the Virgin Islands has announced that it will host a series of pre-election forums titled "St. Croix Votes – V.I. Election 2004" on Oct. 12-14. Sessions will take place at 7 p.m. in the Cafetorium on the St. Croix campus. The forums are designed to promote greater awareness of the issues surrounding the upcoming Virgin Islands election. Candidates have been invited to participate on one of the three forum days. Candidates will present their platforms and respond to questions from a UVI panel and the audience. The UVI panel will include a student, a faculty member and a member of the professional staff. Faculty members interested in participating as panel members or moderators (one day) are being sought. The forums are being organized by UVI's St. Croix Office of the Associate Chancellor, the Student Government Association, Golden Key Honor Society and the Humanities Division.
Class Ring Information Session Set Oct. 13 on St. Croix Campus
Representative of class ring manufacturers will visit UVI's St. Croix campus on from 4 to 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 13, to meet with students or alumni wishing to begin the process of purchasing a class ring. The order process can take from three to six months, so interested students and alumni are encouraged to take advantage of this session. The representatives will meet with interested persons in Evans Center in the lobby area near the library. For more information call 692-4162.
World Food Day Activities Set Oct. 17 on St. Croix Campus
World Food Day activities will be held on Sunday, Oct. 17, from noon to 6 p.m. on UVI's St. Croix campus. There will be a food vendors court, a farmers market, food demonstrations, workshops, music, a petting zoo, children's games and guided tours of research facilities at UVI's Agricultural Experiment Station. All interested schools and youth groups are invited to take part in the "Kids CAN Make a Difference" Food Drive and the "House of Cans" competition. Donations will go to local food banks and the Grenada relief effort. World Food Day is sponsored by UVI's Cooperative Extension Service, the Agricultural Experiment Station and the Department of Agriculture. For more details, call 692-4060.
