Frank Fox, St. Croix Business Advocate, Dies

Oct. 1, 2004 – The St. Croix Community celebrates the life of Frank J. Fox who died on Sept. 20 at the age of 56. Fox, a native of Columbus, Ohio, was well known in the Virgin Islands as an active member of several civic organizations, including the St. Croix Chamber of Commerce where he served as president from 2002 to 2003.
Fox is survived by his wife, Beverly. "They were a team," Chamber president Anna Hector said.
Beverly Fox told of her husbands' love for his adopted island: "It will be seven years in January that we arrived on this island, and the minute he stepped foot here – he loved it. This is his home and we got involved in the community because of its being home."
Lt. Gov. Vargrave Richards extended his sympathy to Fox's family and friends in a press release issued Thursday. "Frank Fox was a staunch advocate for economic development on St. Croix. Mr. Fox was an astute businessman with a friendly disposition who always had the best interest of St. Croix at heart. He will be sorely missed," Richards said.
In summing up the life of Fox, his wife said, "With all that he did – it still boils down to who he was. He was a wonderful, honest, loving and giving man. He loved St. Croix, the people and the culture. St. Croix was and is his home."
Fox succeeded attorney Kevin Rames as Chamber president. Rames said Fox was a "champion of small business on St. Croix and a tireless advocate for entrepreneurship. Frank had an infectious, candid attitude that inspired people around him."
As an illustration of his attitude toward St. Croix business, while soliciting chamber members for the presidency Fox wrote, "The Chamber is most effective when it represents ALL segments, types and kinds of business. I strongly believe that the more members the Chamber has and represents the more effective the Chamber will be in drawing government attention and solutions."
Fox was "on more committees than you could shake a stick at," his wife said on Thursday. He was the chairman of the board of Virgin Islands Experimental Program to Stimulate Competitive Research and served on the board of the Chamber of Commerce. He was a member of the Cruise Ship Task Force, the Governor's Economic Development committee, Sen. Luther Renee's Economic Revitalization Committee, Rotary Mid-Isle, U.S Coast Guard Auxiliary, Navy League, Landmark Society, St. George Village Botanical Garden, Our Town Frederiksted and the St. Croix Friends of Denmark.
Fox played high school football at Ohio's Linden-McKinley high. He enrolled at Ohio State University in 1966, but, due to finances, decided to go to work full time and attend college at night. He later enrolled at Franklin University and graduated in 1971 with a Bachelor of Science in business bdministration with minors in psychology and industrial management.
Fox worked for 27 years in the insurance business. His employment with the Captive Insurance Company introduced him to the Virgin Islands when he was transferred to St. Croix in January 1998.
Services for Frank Fox will be held at 5 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 6, at the Pentheny Building Courtyard in Christiansted
