Bar Association Offering Legal Seminars

Sept. 29, 2004 – If you've got a legal question, plan to attend a free seminar jointly sponsored by the U.S. Attorney's office and the V.I. Bar Association.
Dates are not set, but the organizers want to get the word out and find organizations willing to host a seminar.
"One of the responsibilities of the Bar Association and lawyers in general is to do education," Amos Carty, Bar Association president, said Wednesday.
The seminars will not provide specific legal advice. For that, you'll have to hire a lawyer.
Topics may include understanding how the criminal justice system works, the federal grand jury system, plea-bargaining, and issues surrounding detention and bail.
On the civil side, the attorneys will offer seminars on issues like custody and support, landlord tenant issues, wills, trust and estate planning, and filing in small claims court.
Carty said that attorneys are already presenting seminars in the schools on street law. If you have an idea for a seminar or want an attorney to hold a seminar for your school, public housing community, non-profit group, or faith-based organization, call the Bar Association at 778-7497.
