Reichhold Center Season 2004-2005: Artistic Variety

Sept. 21, 2004 – The Reichhold Center for the Arts at the University of the Virgin Islands has announced its 2004-2005 season. It promises to delight and inspire audiences with "masterful musicianship and unique artistic interpretations," according to a UVI release.
A wide variety of performances begins Oct. 9 with ambassadors of Latin music and one of Puerto Rico's greatest dance bands and ends May 14 with a Chinese dance company. In between will be presentations from all over the map. In the summer of 2004, the Reichhold Caribbean Repertory Company will present a play which wins a playwrights contest.
All performances begin at 8 p.m. unless otherwise noted. Season tickets and tickets for individual performances are available by calling the Reichhold Center box office at 693-1559, Monday through Saturday.
Reichhold Center 2004-2005 Season Lineup
Oct. 9 and 10 – El Gran Combo
This 13-piece ensemble was formed more than four decades ago and is still going strong. It's considered an institution in Puerto Rico's music history. It continues to inspire dancers with horn-punctuated Latin rhythms and lush vocal harmonies. El Gran Combo will perform Oct. 10 at St. Croix's Island Center for the Performing Arts.
Oct. 23 – Puerto Rico Symphony Orchestra
The most successful classical music event to come to St. Thomas returns for a sixth record-breaking appearance with conductor Maestro Roselín Pabón and special guest artist Lorna Freeman of St. Thomas. The orchestra's founder and first conductor was famed cellist Pablo Casals, who visited Puerto Rico in 1956, took up residence, and, along with organizing the Festival Casals, presented the orchestra's first concert in 1958. This is a Reichhold Center/Birch Forum co-production.
Nov. 13 – Isaac Hayes
"Walk On By," "If Loving You Is Wrong, I Don't Want to Be Right," "Never Can Say Goodbye," the theme song from the movie "Shaft:" All these are Isaac Hayes' hits. As the '60s ended, "he put the symphonic into soul music," the release said, setting the tone for the sophisticated sounds of the '70s. He's resident royalty in the Ada coastal district of Ghana, an Oscar and Grammy winner, in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, and he's in the third year of a nightly five-hour No. 1 radio show out of Memphis – just a few of his continuing achievements.
Jan. 15, 2005 – Bello & Blacka
Jamaican comedians Paul Pinto and Winston "Bello" Bell, set the stage and the audience afire with their wild comedic performances. And yes, they are the same duo who led the team that recorded "De Krismos Stori," a telling of the Christmas story in Jamaican Patois, for the Bible Society of the West Indies.
Feb. 5 – Strings
Strings, founded in April 1996, is a group of acoustic guitarists. The music of Strings is instrumental, inspired by Haitian folk, flamenco and Latino-American sounds. They will host a symposium on Feb. 4.
March 5 – Freddie McGregor & Inner Visions Band
Jamaica's supreme reggae ambassador! Freddie McGregor's name comes to the forefront, with his remarkable 40-year tenure, (He was born in 1956, began recording in 1963!) when referring to classic reggae entertainers. He's a singer-songwriter and now owns his recording studio. This performance is coupled with the Inner Visions Band out of St. John, which has become a staple in classic reggae.
May 14 – Lily Cai Chinese Dance Company
The dance company presents ancient Chinese forms blended with modern dance, court dances of Chinese dynasties with contemporary dance fusing classical Chinese dance and ballet. Founder (in 1988) and artistic director Lily Cai is a native of Shanghai and a prominent member of the San Francisco Bay Area's dance community.
In the Summer of 2005 – Reichhold Caribbean Repertory
The Reichhold Caribbean Repertory Company will present a play to be selected as the winner of the Playwrights contest.
