Upward Bound Recruiting New Students

Sept. 17, 2004 – The Upward Bound Program at the University of the Virgin Islands is a college preparatory program for students in ninth through 12th grade. The program will hold recruitment drives Sept. 25 on the St. Thomas and St. Croix campuses to attract new students, according to spokeswoman Nanyamka Farrelly.
Acceptance of the new students into the program is made possible by an increase in funding by the U.S. Department of Education's TRIO Programs. The local program will receive an additional $100,000 each year until 2007 and has already received the first $100,000 installment for the 2004 fiscal year, Farrelly said.
High-school students throughout the territory currently enrolled in the ninth, 10th and 11th grades who are interested in information about the program are invited to attend a session. Parents are required to accompany their children, she said.
The St. Thomas open house is 9 a.m. to noon on Saturday, Sept. 25, at the UVI Sports and Fitness Center. Call 693-1130 by Sept. 22 to RSVP or for more information.
The St. Croix open house is 9 a.m. to noon Sept. 25, at the UVI cafeteria. Call 692-4182 by Sept. 22 to RSVP or for more information.
