St. Thomas Student Organizations Registration-Sept. 15; Orientation-Sept. 16
Wednesday, Sept. 15, is the deadline for student organizations active during the 2004-2005 academic year to register with the UVI Student Activities Office on the St. Thomas campus. A registration form is available in the UVI Student Activities Handbook which is available at the St. Thomas campus Student Activities Office. A leadership orientation session for executive officers of student organizations is scheduled for noon to 2 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 16, in Chase Auditorium (Business Education Room B-110). Organizations are expected to submit tentative schedules of activities and meetings for the Fall 2004 semester as well as any budgetary requests to support these. For more information call 693-1111.
UVI Human Resources Announcement
The UVI Human Resources Office has issued the following announcement for employees on the St. Thomas and St. Croix campuses.
GERS Workshops: The Government Employees Retirement System (GERS) will host workshops on both UVI campuses next week for members who are considering retiring or who wish to learn more about their benefits.
St. Thomas: Thursday, Sept. 16 — 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.; in Teacher Education Room 101
St. Croix: Friday, Sept. 17 — 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.; in Evans Center Room 713

UVI's Roy Watlington to Present VI-EPSCoR Science Seminar Sept. 17
UVI Professor Roy Watlington will present the next in the VI-EPSCoR Seminar Series of science lectures at the University of the Virgin Islands. Watlington's presentation will focus on Caribbean oceanography. It is scheduled from 1 to 2 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 17. The seminar is free and open to the public. It will originate in Room 101 of the Teacher Education Building on UVI's St. Thomas campus and be videoconferenced to Evans Center Room 401 on the St. Croix campus.
The series will continue each Friday through Nov. 19. The series is hosted by UVI's Center for Marine and Environmental Studies, the Division of Science and Mathematics and the VI-Experimental Program to Stimulate Competitive Research (EPSCoR) program. For more information, call 693-1380.
Highfield to Lecture on 'St. Croix's Place in the 18th Century World'
The Social Sciences Division of the University of the Virgin Islands and the St. Croix Landmarks Society will present a lecture by Dr. Arnold Highfield on the "World as Cosmos rather than Continent: St. Croix's Place in and Contribution to a Changing 18th Century World." The focus will be on the intellectual climate of St. Croix at the time of Alexander Hamilton, from the focus of missionaries, naturalists and travelers. This is a follow-up to the Alexander Hamilton Symposium held at Government House in July. Dr. Highfield was a full professor of linguistics and social sciences on the St. Croix campus of UVI and is internationally known for his research on Virgin Islands history. The presentation will be in the UVI St. Croix campus Cafetorium in the Student Center starting at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 21. The lecture is free and the public is invited. '180 Degree Theory' Author to Speak at UVI's Little Theater Sept. 24
Devin "Dutchie" Robinson, Sr., creator of the 180 Degree Theory, will make a presentation from 12:30 to 2 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 24, at the University of the Virgin Islands Little Theater in the CA Building on the St. Thomas campus. Robinson, who was born and raised on St. Thomas, is the author of "The 180 Day Theory . . . Change Through Empowerment." His theory is designed to help people who want to elevate their lives and reshape the way they live, think and approach situations. In addition to being an author, Robinson is also a columnist and entrepreneur. UVI students and the general public are invited to this free presentation. UVI Fall Research Symposium Set Sept. 25 in Sports and Fitness Center
The fourth annual University of the Virgin Islands Fall Research Symposium will take place at the Sports and Fitness Center on the St. Thomas campus from 1 to 4 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 25. Approximately 30 UVI science, mathematics, engineering and technology students will use posters to showcase research they completed during the past academic year or during summer research programs on St. Croix, St. Thomas and the U.S. mainland. Saturday Science Academies to Open Sept. 25; Application Deadline is Sept. 19
The University of the Virgin Islands will begin its fall semester Saturday Science Awareness Academies for junior and senior high school students from throughout the territory on Saturday, Sept. 25. Academies will be conducted on both the St. Thomas and St. Croix campuses. There are a total of 120 positions for students, half on St. Thomas and half on St. Croix. The academies, which are free, are designed for students with a serious interest in science or mathematics. Application forms have been distributed to all schools in the territory. Little Theatre Sets Sept. 20-21 Auditions for Fall Production of 'The Mousetrap'
The University of the Virgin Islands' Little Theatre has announced plans to stage Agatha Christy's "The Mousetrap" in November. The Little Theatre, located in the second floor of the CA Building on the St. Thomas campus, has scheduled auditions for 7 to 8:30 p.m. on Sept. 20 and 21. Projected production dates for the popular "who-done-it" are Nov. 19, 20, 21 and 22. For more information contact Prof. Rosary Harper at 693-1354.
President Ragster Scheduled on 'Face to Face' Sept. 29
UVI President Dr. LaVerne E. Ragster is scheduled to be a guest on the television program "Face to Face" at 8 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 29, on WTJX Channel 12.
Student Activities Fair-Voter's Registration Set Sept. 30 on St. Thomas
A student activities fair and voter registration event on the St. Thomas campus is scheduled in two sessions on Thursday, Sept. 30. Session one will be held from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Session two is scheduled from 5 p.m. and 7 p.m. Both will be in the Sports and Fitness Center. All students, including part-time and graduate students who now pay Student Activities Fees, are encouraged to participate.
Participants Sought for Planning Committee of Caribbean Debating Competition
The Student Activities Office on the St. Thomas campus is seeking faculty, staff and students interested in serving on the planning committee for the 15th Caribbean Intercollegiate Debating Competition scheduled for the St. Thomas campus in March of 2005. Call 693-1111 for more information.
Guest Lecturers Sought by St. Thomas Campus Business Division
Members of the Virgin Islands business community are invited to submit requests to participate in the on-going Fall Guest Lecturer Series sponsored by the Business Division of the University of the Virgin Islands, St. Thomas campus. Guest speakers are being sought to lecture students in various business classes on a wide range of topics, including issues in personnel management, market research, Total Quality Management practices, investment strategies, and mergers and acquisitions.
The goals of the Guest Lecture Series include providing a forum through which members of the V.I. business community can play a developmental role with tomorrow's leaders and enhancing the student learning experience by bridging the gap between the real world and

Queen's Committee Seeks Performers for Miss UVI Competition
The University of the Virgin Islands Queen's Committee is seeking performers for the upcoming Miss UVI competition. Individuals or groups that can perform short skits, dancing, singing, poetry reading, stand-up comedy, stepping and instrumental performances are invited to audition. An open audition will be held from 2 to 5 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 19, in the Dining Pavilion on UVI's St. Thomas campus. UVI-CELL Partners with GIA to Offer Accredited Jewelry Professional Course
UVI's Community Engagement and Lifelong Learning (CELL) Center has announced it will partner with the Gemological Institute of America (GIA) to offer the Accredited Jewelry Professional diploma program in St. Thomas on Oct. 25 through 29. This is a first for the Virgin Islands. UVI Cell Director Ilene Garner said the program is designed to "greatly benefit one of our major industry sectors." Participants will receive a free one-year membership in the GIA Alumni Association's newly formed Caribbean Islands Chapter. For more information about GIA, visit www.gia.edu. Tour Guide Training Program
Young adults between the ages of 16-26 are encouraged to enroll in a free, six-week tour guide training program co-sponsored by the University of the Virgin Islands-Community Engagement and Lifelong Learning (UVICELL) Center and the Hassel Island Preservation Trust. Classes will be held 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. every Saturday beginning Sept. 18, at UVI's St. Thomas campus. The course provides training and work experience in interpreting the cultural and natural resources of Hassel Island, one of St. Thomas' hidden treasures. Classroom training will be provided by skilled lecturers in the fields of historic preservation, eco-tourism, interpretative skills and public speaking. The application deadline is Sept. 16. Coed Volleyball League Scheduled on St. Croix Campus
UVI students, staff and faculty are invited to participate in a coed volleyball league scheduled to begin the third week of September on the St. Croix campus. Games will be played on the campus' outdoor sports facilities two nights each week. The days and times are yet to be decided. Teams must include at least three men and three women. They are limited to 10 players. Interested individuals should contact Bruce Wray at 692-4139.
Coed Volleyball League Scheduled on St. Thomas Campus
UVI students, staff and faculty on the St. Thomas campus still have time to form volleyball teams and join in a coed volleyball league scheduled to begin on Thursday, Sept. 16. Games will be held in the Sports and Fitness Center between 6 and 8 p.m., with each team playing two or three times per week. Teams must include at least three men and three women. They are limited to 10 players. Interested individuals should contact Erik Heikkila at 693-1213.
UVI to Host ODI Tennis Championships on St. Croix; Student Participants Sought
UVI has announced it will host the ODI Tennis Championships on St. Croix on October 1 through 3. Men's and women's team championships as well as singles and doubles events are scheduled. Any interested full-time students who wish to tryout for UVI should contact Coach Bruce Wray on St. Croix at 693-4139 or Coach Erik Heikkilla at 693-1213 on St. Thomas.
UVI Seeking Cross Country Team Participants
UVI will participate in the ODI Cross Country Championships that will be held this fall in Puerto Rico. Events will include the men's 10K run and the women's 5K run. Any full-time students interested in participating should contact Coach Bruce Wray on St. Croix at 692-1439 or Coach Erik Heikkilla at 693-1213 on St. Thomas.
