Sept. 14, 2004 Virgin Islands residents should expect weather conditions to deteriorate Tuesday afternoon as Tropical Storm Jeanne moves through the area.
St. Thomas and St. John should start feeling some of the winds and rain from the storm by 2 p.m., Robert Mitchell, meteorologist at the National Weather Service in San Juan, said.
Along with estimated 50 mph winds with heavier gusts, the storm is expected to bring heavy rains of up to seven to nine inches.
The U.S. Virgin Islands and British Virgin Islands are on a tropical storm watch. Residents are urged to make preparations for a tropical storm.
Mitchell said he expects the storm to be 35 miles east of St. Croix by 5 p.m. Tuesday. Between 8 and 10 p.m., it will pass just south of St. Thomas. At midnight, it will go across St. Thomas.
He said the winds extend out 35 to 40 miles.
As of 2 p.m. Tuesday, Tropical Storm Jeanne was centered at 16.7 degrees north latitude and 63.5 degrees west longitude. This puts it about 100 miles east-southeast of St. Croix.
Winds had reached 50 mph with some higher gusts. The barometric pressure stands at 1002 millibars or 29.59 inches.
The storm was moving toward the northwest at 10 mph.
