Ferry Service Now Goes to Anegada

Sept. 10, 2004 – The Tortola-based Smith's Ferry Service is now making it easier to get to Anegada in the British Virgin Islands. The company is running trips from St. Thomas on the last Sunday of every month.
"It gives people a chance to get away, to relax and to visit a place that's hardly visited," said Marjorie Mahoney of Smith's Ferry.
The boat leaves Tortola Wharf on the St. Thomas waterfront at 8:15 a.m., stopping to clear customs in Tortola before reaching Anegada.
The trip costs $95. It includes round-trip ferry fare, an island tour and anything on the menu, except lobster, at the Big Bamboo Restaurant. If you only want to hop the ferry, the fare runs $65 round trip.
Mahoney said the return ferry leaves at 4 p.m., putting riders back in St. Thomas around 6 p.m. The ferry stops to clear U.S. Customs in Cruz Bay on the way back to St. Thomas, so St. John residents, you can get off.
Anegada is flat, a big contrast to the rest of the Virgin Islands. White sandy beaches fringe its perimeter, and offshore reefs and wrecks make for great swimming and snorkeling. Flamingos living in a salt pond are a major attraction.
Anegada has remained elusive for most Virgin Islands residents. Clair Aero flies from Cyril E. King Airport in St. Thomas through Tortola several times a week, but even information about the flights is hard to come by since Clair Aero answers the phone only sporadically in St. Thomas.
There is no way to get to Anegada from St. John and St. Croix unless you connect in St. Thomas or Tortola.
Mahoney said Smith's Ferry has run the trips for the past four months.
