Aug. 30, 2004 – Through Sept. 10 the Water and Power Authority plans to continue work installing high-voltage electrical cables in underground conduits that have been installed between the J. Antonio Jarvis Elementary School Annex and Crown Bay via the waterfront.
On Monday the authority's contractor, Fortress Electric, was to begin working on the waterfront apron near the U.S. Coast Guard headquarters.
On Tuesday, the company was scheduled to begin splicing cables from the Frenchtown post office along Harwood Highway toward Addelita Cancryn Junior High School and Crown Bay. "When this work begins, one lane of traffic westbound will be closed from 9 a.m. until 4:30 p.m., a release issued by WAPA on Monday stated.
The taking of cables underground "is part of the $5 million new Feeder 13 loop system that is being constructed by WAPA to improve electrical distribution in the St. Thomas-St. John-Water Island district," the release stated. "The new feeder will provide a dual high-voltage transmission system" that will permit the utility "to provide electricity to areas from two different locations," it said.
