Sewage Work Being Done Near Housing Community

August 25, 2004 -The Division of Environmental Protection, while investigating reports of sewage discharge in the vicinity of the John F. Kennedy Housing Community, found that the LBJ Pump Station suffered structural damage to its force main line.
Dean C. Plaskett, commissioner of the Department of Planning and Natural Resources, said in a press release that, according to the Department of Public Works, the damaged line is located west of Building No. 14 of the John F. Kennedy Housing Community.
As of 3 p.m. Tuesday, the station pump had been by-passed with a line routed over Long Reef while repairs were being made.
DPW does not yet know when the work will be completed.
The public is advised to avoid impacted areas in and around the Housing Community, the LBJ Pump Station, and the Long Reef in the Christiansted Harbor. Children and adults with compromised immune systems should especially avoid the above-mentioned areas. Standing or running water in these areas may contain contaminants or pollutants harmful to human health. DPNR will continue to monitor the impacted area. For additional information call the Division of Environmental Protection at 773-1082.
