Apply for Anderson School Project Grants by Sept. 30

Aug. 16, 2004 – For the third successive year, the Community Foundation of the Virgin Islands is inviting public school teachers to apply for grants of up to $1,000 from the Anderson Family Fund for Education to implement innovative projects in their classrooms and schools.
The program, administered by CFVI, provides grants on a competitive basis to teachers, teacher assistants and guidance counselors for projects aimed at improving student achievement.
In the first two years, the fund awarded a total of $42,000 to 81 teachers. Last year, teachers from 26 schools received awards to enrich their students' classroom experiences.
Up to $20,000 in grants is available again this year, according to a release. Awards must supplement school resources, not replace local or federal funding. Priority will be given to projects in which students are directly involved, where creative strategies and activities are used to improve student learning, and in which outcomes are measurable and substantive.
The Anderson Family Fund was established in 2002 to improve public education for economically disadvantaged children in the territory through the support of educational enrichment programs not offered in the regular school curriculum.
John E. Anderson, chair of Topa Equities, said the money "will be put to good use in many different community-oriented projects."
Grant application forms have been mailed to the principals of all V.I. public schools. They also are available on St. Thomas at the Community Foundation offices in Royal Dane Mall and at The Draughting Shaft in Havensight Mall. On St. Croix they can be picked up at the St. Croix Chamber of Commerce offices, 3009 Orange Grove, Ste 12.
Completed applications must be received at CFVI by 5 p.m. Sept. 30.
For more information, visit the CFVI Web site or call the foundation office at 774-6031.
