30 Celebrities Coming for Golf Tournament

August 1, 2004 – Beacon Schools of the Virgin Islands will be hosting its 8th annual Celebrity Golf Tournament at Mahogany Run Golf Course, April 6th through 8th, according to a July 31 release. Thirty celebrities will be on the island, from sports greats to actors and singers, for the tournament activities.
Kevin Rames, president of Beacon Schools, said the event will team local businesses people on the golf course with such celebrities as Hall of Fame basketball greats Julius Erving, "Dr. J," Celtics star Sam Jones and five other former NBA players – Gus Williams, Maurice Lucas, Austin Carr, Johnny Newman, and Kevin Grevey. Jack McKinney, 1980 NBA Coach of the Year, will walk the course with former 76'ers assistant coach Fred Carter. Veteran NBA referee Bob Delaney rounds out the basketball stars.
Football celebrities include former Heisman Trophy winner George Rogers along with other NFL stars Mike Pruitt, Mark Mosely, Andy Johnson, Tim Fox, Chris Doleman, John Davis and D’Andre White.
Rounding out the athletes are major league baseball players, George Foster, formerly of the San Francisco Giants, and Cliff Johnson, formerly of the Houston Astros.
Not to be outdone by the sports persons, several celebrity entertainers will also grace the golf course. Grammy-award winner Dawn Lewis, rapper MC Lyte, actors Earl Billings and Tucker Smallwood are returning again this year as well as Basil Wallace, KiKi Shepard, and Beverly Johnson. Jacqueline Fleming and Jackee Harry will be new comers to the tournament. Fashion model Suzi McCoppin is making her debut on the links.
St. Croix is will get a piece of the action when coach McKinney along with Lucas and Newman conducts a mini-basketball camp for students in grades 9 through 12 at the St. Croix Educational Complex, Aug. 4 and 5. The camp is hosted by Beacon Schools in cooperation with the V. I. Basketball Federation. If you want to play a part, contact Sen. Usie Richards, president of the V.I. Beacon Schools of the Virgin Islands Inc. is a community-based after school program, which offer sports and recreation, arts and culture, educational opportunities, vocational training, health education, and provides room for community meetings and neighborhood social activities. Beacon operates in the Elena Christian and Claude O. Marko schools in St. Croix, the E. Benjamin Oliver and Addelita Cancryn schools in St. Thomas and Julius Sprauve School in St. John.
Rames reports that the community has provided substantial sponsorships.
Stars will begin arriving in St. Thomas on Wednesday and on Thursday the Hard Rock Café is the site of "draft night" where celebrities will be matched with local golfers. The celebrity challenge round will be held Saturday morning and the celebrity scramble will happen on Sunday. Trophies will be presented to the winning teams at the end of the tournament.
Diana Parker, executive director of Beacon Schools, reports that all of the teams have been sold out but a few of the holes still need sponsorship. Businesses are still being solicited to support Beacon Schools by purchasing a hole.
