June 10, 2004 – Friday has been proclaimed a Day of Remembrance of President Reagan in the Virgin Islands.
Lt. Gov. Vargrave Richards, in his capacity as acting governor, urged Virgin Islanders in a release issued on Thursday afternoon to offer their thoughts and prayers for the late president and his family.
"President Reagan demonstrated great personal courage in recovering from an assassin's bullet in 1981 to return to his duties as president and in his struggle with Alzheimer's disease," Richards said.
Gov. Charles W. Turnbull on Saturday ordered that flags in the territory be flown at half-staff for 30 days in Reagan's memory.
The Legislature's central staff offices will be closed on Friday in observance of the national day of mourning, Senate President David Jones announced on Thursday. No Senate meetings were scheduled this week.
