May 26, 2004 – The Water and Power Authority is accepting applications from residents of the Contant Knolls housing community who want to sign up for newly available potable water service.
The installation of water lines to the area above Nisky near the Old Mill has been completed, WAPA said in a release issued on Wednesday. Application forms are available at the utility's customer service office in Sub Base.
"Each customer will be responsible for providing individual service connections which require prior approval from WAPA's Water Distribution Department," the release stated. Completed applications should be submitted to the customer service office, which is open from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. weekdays and from 8 a.m. to noon on Saturdays.
While the laying of pipe is completed, a permanent pump unit is yet to be installed, according to the release. This is expected to be done in July, it said, and in the meantime a temporary pump is being used.
The project received $471,476 in federal Community Development Block Grant funding from the V.I. Housing Authority, with another $278,524 coming from WAPA.
Initial excavation work preliminary to laying the lines began in February of 2003, when it was anticipated that the project would take three months to complete. (See "Excavation Gets Under Way on Airport Highway".)
"The Contant Knolls project is just one of several capital improvements slated by the authority to expand the water distribution system in both districts," WAPA officials noted.
