Government Offers Workshops for Small Businesses

May 21, 2004 – V.I. government officials have scheduled several events to celebrate Small Business Week, June 14-18.
Dean Plaskett, commissioner of the Department of Planning and Natural Resources, announced in a press release that the events will be on St. John, St. Croix and St. Thomas.
To start the week, the Division of Environmental Protection's Small Business Technical Assistance Program will co-host the St. Thomas/St. John Chamber of Commerce Business After Hours on Thursday, June 10, from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m., at the Holiday Inn Windward Passage Hotel.
Plaskett said, "The Business After Hours event is an opportunity for the business community to meet DEP staff and to learn about environmental compliance issues important to most if not all business establishments."
Other activities during the week, hosted by the division, include three information distribution days for small businesses and two free workshops for professionals in the construction industry.
The information distribution days are Monday, June 14, on St. John at the Band Stand; Wednesday, June 16, on St. Thomas at the Emancipation Garden and Friday, June 18, on St. Croix at Budhoe Park in Frederiksted.
The two workshops for general contractors, construction, demolition and building industry professionals will be held on Tuesday, June 15 at the Palm Court Harbor View Hotel on St. Thomas and on Thursday, June 17 at Gertrude's Restaurant on St. Croix. Workshops include information regarding asbestos abatement, earth change, demolition, CZM Permits, building permits and storm water permits.
Registration is 8 a.m., and the workshops run 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Lunch will be provided to all registered to attend. Anyone wishing to attend should call 714-9529 before June 4.
Plaskett said, "DPNR's Small Business Technical Assistance Program is every small business's source for information regarding environmental compliance. During our Small Business Week celebration, I highly encourage the business community to come out and participate in our planned activities including our workshops." He continued, "The workshops for construction professionals is certainly a golden opportunity for contractors and construction companies to keep informed of various construction requirements in the territory."
