Youth to Make Movies in Workshop

May 20, 2004 – The University of the Virgin Islands Reichhold Center for the Arts is seeking participants for the 2004 Youth Moviemaking Workshop to be held from June 21 to Aug. 7.
Students, ages 12-18, who are interested in learning skills in the field of theatrical digital film production are encouraged to apply. The cost of the intensive seven-week program is $750 per student. Classes will be held from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Mondays through Thursdays at the Reichhold Center. The application deadline is June 4.
Students on St. Croix are urged to apply; as for the first time ever the program will allow St. Croix students to participate.
The Youth Moviemaking Workshop teaches young people the skills needed to produce their own videos and television programs, while providing an opportunity to explore their creativity. Four weeks of the program will consist of a comprehensive segment of training in the use of the digital camera, the language of film, script development, the creation of a production team, footage shooting and footage editing. The practical segment of the program will be a three weeks practicum devoted to the final project, which is a completed 10-15 minutes movie or a cultural documentary.
Young people interested in attending the Youth Movie Making Workshop must submit:
1. A completed application
2. A sample of their creative works (at least two drawings or paintings, a short story, at least two poems, two photos etc.)
3. A short essay detailing why they want to be in the program and what they hope to gain from the program.
4. Two letters of recommendation.
The 20 participants will be chosen following an interview with the Reichhold Center's Moviemaking Workshop Instructors.
For an application or more information call the Reichhold Center at 693-1550.
