Pistarckle 'Night at the Races' Is Youth Camp Benefit

May 18, 2004 – Pistarckle Theater is presenting "A Night at the Races" on Saturday to raise funds for its summer camp for children.
The fund-raiser event takes place at the theater in Tillett Gardens, beginning at 7:30 p.m. Admission is $20; there will be a light buffet and a cash bar. "There will be horse racing on video and lots of fun," Pistarckle managing artistic director Nicola Emerich said in a release.
Saturday's event also "will mark the debut of our new film project," Emerich said.
This is the seventh year that Pistarckle is holding a young people's summer drama camp, and this one has a name — STAR 2004. It's open to children ages 9-18. The dates are June 14-July 11, and hours are 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Friday.
Holli Hornlien will be back teaching acting and directing the camp production, the musical "Wonderland!" which based on the Lewis Carroll classic about Alice and her adventures. Lauren Burke-Stewart is returning to choreograph the production and direct the music. She recently completed her degree in musical theater at the University of California at Berkeley.
The musical "is an unabashedly silly adaptation" of "Through the Looking Glass," a release states, with hip-hopping music, a baseball team, a gospel group called The Responsibilities, star-struck tourists, light-saber-wielding knights and more.
Public performances of "Wonderland!" on July 8-11 will wrap up the camp.
Registration for summer camp is May 24 at the theater between 3 and 7 p.m. The fee is $800 for four weeks. "There may be scholarship support for qualified candidates," the release states.
