Compilation of Locally Available Scholarships

April 18, 2004 – Following are summaries of information provided to the Source by sponsoring organizations about scholarships currently available.
In some cases, more extensive articles also are posted. To access them, search at the bottom of this section of the Source using the key word "scholarship."
Government Employees Retirement System
Donor organization: GERS Investment Managers; awarded through Community Foundation of the Virgin Islands
Number of scholarships: Up to three
Amount of scholarship: Not announced; tuition support for four years
Qualifications: Dependents of GERS membership enrolled full-time in a program leading to the award of a bachelor's degree.
Deadline for applying: April 23, 2004 (postmarked)
How/where to obtain an application: GERS Complexes on St. Thomas and St. Croix, or by telephone to Community Foundation of the Virgin Islands, 774-6031.

Friends of the V.I. National Park
Donor organization: The Friends
Number of scholarships: Two
Amount of scholarship: $1,000, disbursed at $500 per semester.
Qualifications: Students studying in fields related to natural resource management or protection who are entering their junior or senior year at an accredited university. V.I. residents who completed high school in the Virgin Islands, have completed all prerequisite course work for majors in appropriate fields, and maintained a B average through the first three (for sophomores) or five (for juniors) semesters.
Deadline: April 30, 2004 (extended).

Alva C. McFarlane Scholarship
Donor organization: V.I. Water and Power Authority
Number of scholarships: four (two in each district)
Amount of scholarship: $60,000 toward bachelor's degree or $20,000 for an associate degree, in the form of a noninterest-bearing loan. A recipient is expected to repay the scholarship/loan by returning to WAPA as an employee for one year for each year of financial aid.
Qualifications: Graduating seniors who will pursue engineering or technical degrees at accredited colleges or universities.
Deadline for applying: May 5, 2004
How/where to obtain an application: at high schools and at WAPA business offices, including the customer service office on St. John.

St. Croix Federation of Teachers, Local 1826
Donor Organization: St. Croix Federation of Teachers
Number of scholarships: 5
Amount of scholarship: $1,000, one-time.
Qualifications: High school seniors of AFT members
Deadline for applying: May 20, 2004
How/where to obtain application: contact school guidance counselors or the Local 1826 union office at 778-4414.

Robert C. Byrd
Administering organization: V.I. Education Department
Number of scholarships: Five, in the St. Thomas/St. John District
Amount of scholarship: $1,500 per year. Renewal with submission of required evidence showing eligibility maintenance
Qualifications: Recent high school graduates who have been accepted into a college or university and who plan to attend full-time in the year they apply. A "C" or better average is required.. Public, private and GED graduates are eligible.
Deadline for applying: May 26, 2004, 5 p.m.
How/where to obtain an application: Available in the office of the Insular Superintendent, Curriculum Center, Anna's Retreat and at the office of the Commissioner of Education, and at each high school in the district.
