STARfest Held Over for Encore Performance
An encore performance of STARfest 10 will be held at 8 p.m. Sunday, May 16. STARfest is a variety-styled show produced annually by the UVI Reichhold Center for the Arts. Performances on May 8 and 9 were sold out. See the full News Release on the UVI home page (link below).
UVI Spring Semester 2004 Classes Ended; Summer Session to Start June 11
Spring semester 2004 classes officially ended Sunday, May 9. The deadline for instructors to submit grades is 10 a.m. Monday, May 17. Summer session registration is scheduled for Thursday, June 10 and Friday, June 11. Summer session will begin Monday, June 14.
St. Thomas Class of 2004 Student Regalia Available at Bookstore
The UVI St. Thomas campus bookstore has announced that regalia and Kente stoles for students in the graduating class of 2004 are now available. Students can pick up their regalia from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at the bookstore. Distribution will continue through Tuesday, May 11.
St. Croix Class of 2004 Student Regalia Available at Bookstore
The UVI St. Croix campus bookstore has announced that regalia for students in the graduating class of 2004 is now available. Students can pick up their regalia from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. through Monday, May 17.
St. Croix Campus to Host Reading Campaign Conference on May 15
UVI's St. Croix Campus will host the 2nd Annual Reading Campaign Conference presented by the V.I. Education Department's Curriculum, Assessment and Technology Division, St. Croix District, from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Saturday, May 15. The opening session will be held in the cafetorium, with workshops to be held in various classrooms and exhibits on the library's terrace.
The conference will include workshops to assist parents and teachers in understanding reading scores and results of diagnostic assessment. Conference sponsors such as Houghton Mifflin Publishing and the St. Croix Library Association will present exhibits of quality books for children and young adults and book sales at bargain prices to encourage summer reading.

UVI Extends Deadline for Admissions Applications Until May 30
UVI has announced the extension of the deadline for the submission of applications for admissions through Sunday, May 30.
All interested persons are encouraged to apply. Individuals are asked to submit a completed admissions packet to the university's admissions office promptly. This packet should include the following:
1. a UVI admissions application;
2. an official high school and/or college transcript(s) or official GED verification;
3. an official GCE, CXC or CAPE results, if applicable;
4. an official SAT or ACT results, for undergraduate applicants, or GMAT results for potential MBA and MPA graduate applicants; and
5. a $25 (US) check or money order.

STARfest Featured Each Monday on WTJX-TV
The Virgin Islands' best singers and dancers are being featured each Monday in STARfest on WTJX Public Television. The program, including highlights from past STARfests, airs at 8 p.m. It is offered in collaboration with UVI's Reichhold Center for the Arts and is designed to generate interest for STARFest Live which is planned for this fall.
UVI to Administer ASE Exam on St. Thomas Campus on May 11
UVI will administer the last of three National Institute of Automotive Service Excellence exams on the St. Thomas campus May 11. The exams will be conducted at 6:30 p.m. in the Freshman Center, Suite 118 of the Classroom Administration Building. For more information call 693-1152.
Draft Staff Council By-laws Revised; Vote Planned May 13
Members of the UVI Staff Council are advised that a revised draft of the Staff Council bylaws is available on the UVI Home page. A vote on the bylaws is scheduled for Thursday, May 13. The next meeting of the UVI Staff Council has been scheduled for noon on May 25. The session will be videoconferenced in Chase Auditorium (Business Education Room 110) on the St. Thomas campus and in the Theater (Evans Center Room 401) on St. Croix campus.
St. Thomas Class of 2004 Spring Ball Scheduled May 15
The St. Thomas campus graduating class of 2004 will hold its spring ball — "A Night of Sheer Elegance" — at 7 p.m. Saturday, May 15, at the Westin Hotel on St. John. The ball is sponsored by the class' social and cultural committee and the UVI alumni affairs office. UVI-CELL Conferring Certificates on 150 Trainees
The UVI Community Engagement and Lifelong Learning Center is conferring certificates of completion upon approximately 150 recent program participants. Some 80 individuals were honored in St. Thomas ceremonies held on May 8. The St. Croix presentations are scheduled for May 14. Approximately 70 individuals will be awarded certificates on St. Croix. The ceremony is scheduled at 7:30 p.m. in the cafetorium on UVI's St. Croix campus. Recipients completed requirements in the following courses of study: International Computer's Driver's License, Essentials of Business Writing, Sharpening Your Writing Edge, Legal Assistant's Certification Exam Review, Real Estate Salesperson's Course, Real Estate Appraisers and Brokers Course, AutoCAD 2002, Occupational Safety and Health Administration 511, Basic Computer Graphics, and the CPA Certified Public Accountant Review. The ceremonies are open to certificate recipients and their families. For more information call 693-1109.
Upward Bound Slates Youth Role Model Luncheon on May 16
The Parents Association of UVI's Upward Bound college preparation program on the St. Thomas campus will host the 14th Annual Youth Role Model Luncheon at 12:30 p.m. Sunday, May 16, at the Wyndham Sugar Bay Beach Resort. Youth role model honorees are: Keli Chongasing of All Saints School, Cara Lee Williams of Antilles School, Jevauhn Jones of Charlotte Amalie High School, Shatel Francis of Ivanna Eudora Kean High School, Jamie Steffens of Sts. Peter and Paul High School, Keridon Williams of Seventh-Day Adventist School, Kharina John of Wesleyan Academy and Angela Gumbs of the Upward Bound Program. Tickets are $35 and are available from honorees and at the Upward Bound office, room 100 H of the Classroom Administration Building, on UVI's St. Thomas campus.
2004 Faculty Institute Scheduled for May 18-19
UVI's 2004 Faculty Institute is scheduled for May 18 and 19. Included will be plenary sessions of interest to all faculty and a variety of concurrent short workshops.
UVI-CELL Adds Common Sense Investing Course on St. Croix
A course titled Common Sense Investing for V.I. Residents, offered on St. Croix, is the latest addition to the offerings of UVI's Community Engagement and Lifelong Learning Center. CELL courses are designed for individuals seeking new careers and professional advancement, or those who want to explore a hobby
or leisure-time activities.
The new course stresses a common-sense approach to investing. It covers understanding how to manage personal finances in order to confidently make educated decisions. The instructors will be Michael J. Kelleher and Christopher E. Margolin of UBS Financial Services, Inc. Topics will include: financial management overview, retirement plan structures and strategies, stock and bond market advanced techniques, tax strategies and estate planning.
The course will be offered from 6 to 7:30 p.m. on Wednesdays from June 2 through July 7. The fee is $99. Classes will be held in Room 143 of the Research and Extension Center on UVI's St. Croix campus. For more information call 693-1100, send e-mail or visit the CELL Web site.
National Small Business Week Being Celebrated in V.I. from May 10-14
National Small Business Week is being celebrated in the Virgin Islands with a series of events and activities sponsored by UVI's Small Business Development Center and the Small Business Administration.

May 13 – SBDC/SBA Awards Program in collaboration with STT/STJ Chamber of Commerce's Business After Hours Networking Reception from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the SBDC office in Nisky Center. Several SBDC awards are planned, including two SBDC Corporate V.I. Advocates of the Year Awards, the U.S. Small Business Administration's Small Business Person of the Year and the prestigious SBA's V.I. Bank of the Year Award.
