BICYCLIST'S BODY FOUND ALONGSIDE EVANS HIGHWAY

April 18, 2004 – The body of Wilfredo Figueroa, 64, was found along the side of Melvin Evans Highway on Saturday morning. Police said he had been riding his bicycle and it appeared he was the victim of a hit-and-run collision.
Sgt. Thomas Hannah, Police Department spokesman, said police theorize that Figueroa was struck from the rear and that his body had been there for some time. His bicycle was demolished, Hannah said.
An investigation was under way Monday to determine the time of death and the cause of the collision.
According to Hannah, police received a call around 6 a.m. Saturday from workers who came upon the body while cleaning brush along the side of the highway adjacent to Blessing, a Hovensa residential community.
Members of Figueroa's family told police that they had last seen him on Thursday. They said he liked to go for rides on his bicycle between 5 and 8 a.m.
Hannah asked that anyone with information concerning the mishap call the police criminal investigation unit at 778-2211, ext. 4530, the traffic unit at 778-2244, the crime line at 778-4950, or 911.
