SCHOOLS MARKING 'WEEK OF THE YOUNG CHILD'

April 17, 2004 – In observance of April 18-24 nationwide as the Week of the Young Child, various public schools in the district have scheduled special activities in coming days.
The theme of the week is "Children's Opportunities – Our Responsibilities." Its significance, according to a release from the Education Department, is that "a child's academic and social success is, in part, a result of the attention and concern shown during a specific period of a child's growth and development."
Planned events in the St. Thomas-St. John district include school assemblies and parades, open houses, a family reading day, cultural games and songs, flag and banner displays, art exhibits, field trips and class exchanges. Parents, guardians and friends are invited to participate.
The years from birth to 8 "represent the foundation for a child's success in school and adulthood," April Munroe-Phillips, district primary grades coordinator, said in the release. The week-long observance "gives students, teachers, counselors and parents the opportunity to come together to share information, discuss issues and implement success strategies to help our youngsters become better students and more productive adults," the release said.
For specific information about the week's activities, call Munroe-Phillips at 775-2250, ext. 225.
