UVI Registration for Fall 2004 Continues Online
UVI offers on-line registration for continuing students for the fall 2004 semester through Friday, April 23. Returning UVI students register via the Internet using personal identification numbers (PINs) that are provided by faculty advisers. They access registration forms by logging to banweb.uvi.edu. Students who still need personal identification numbers should contact their advisers. Individuals experiencing problems with online registration should contact the Registrar's office at 693-1160 on St. Thomas or the academic services office at 692-4158 on St. Croix.
UVI Little Theatre Offers Spring Production April 16-19
The UVI Little Theatre's spring production "The Night Thoreau Spent in Jail" opens Friday, April 16, for a four-night run. Written by Jerome Lawrence and Robert E. Lee, the play offers a historical yet believably current look at the night Thoreau was thrown in jail in 1846 for nonpayment of taxes. The play will feature members of the community as well as UVI students. Show dates are April 16, 17, 18 and 19. Show time is 8 p.m. Tickets are $12 for adults and $6 for students. The UVI Little Theatre is located in the Classroom Administration Building on the St. Thomas campus. Call 693-1354 for details.
UVI Carnival Troupe Practices Continue; Car Wash Set April 17
Practice sessions for UVI's 2004 Carnival Troupe continue each Tuesday, Thursday and Friday at 5 p.m. at the Dining Pavilion on the St. Thomas campus. Individuals interested in participating can visit a practice or get more information on the UVI Carnival Troupe Web page on the UVI home page (link below). UVI's community engagement Carnival committee will conduct a carwash from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, April 17, in the Student Affairs parking lot on the St. Thomas campus.
UVI Student Creates V.I. Health Care Web Site; Schneider Hospital Display Set
A culturally relevant Web site, authored by Christine Lauterborn, a senior nursing student at UVI, has recently been published. The site was created specifically for the V.I. community. It offers healthcare information about diseases and conditions that affect Virgin Islanders, including risk factors, prevention and treatment. It also includes a comprehensive directory of local health related agencies and organizations, government and nongovernment, on three islands. Visit the site at www.vihealthadvisor.info. Once there, viewers can contact the author via e-mail, or provide feedback by submitting an online evaluation form. The Web site was created as the nursing student's senior leadership health project.
Lauterborn and other senior bachelor of science nursing students will display information containing valuable health advice this coming Monday and Tuesday, April 19 and 20, in the lobby of the Roy Lester Schneider Hospital. In addition to Lauterborn's Web site, other topics will include: Safety Away from Home: A Pediatric Emergency; Manual for Daycare Workers; Fit-4-Life: A Nursing Teaching Tool for the Control of Childhood Obesity; EZ Learning for Adolescents with Type 1 Diabetes; and UVI No Smoking Policy: A Whiff of Wellness.
UVI's The Caribbean Writer Garners Pushcart Honor
The Caribbean Writer, an annual literary anthology published by UVI, has received its second honorable mention from the Pushcart Prize: Best of the Small Presses. This prestigious honor was awarded for the story "Cadillacs and Thunderbirds," by Melissa Lugo, which appeared in Volume 16. EPSCoR Offers $10,000 Grants for Innovative Scientific Research Projects
EPSCoR — the Virgin Islands Experimental Program to Stimulate Competitive Research — will award approximately four $10,000 "incubator" grants for scientific research in areas that have the potential to stimulate economic activity. A key aspect of the incubator grant program is that projects must have the ability to become self-sustaining through additional federal or local grant funding or through local, long-term commitment. Funding will become available beginning in January 2005. More information is available on-line in a grant proposal description available from the Latest Links section of the UVI Home page. Human Resources Office Sets Hours for April 20 on St. Croix
Desserie Smith, human resources specialist for employee benefits, will visit the St. Croix campus on Tuesday, April 20, to conduct office hours. Individuals who wish to schedule an appointment should call extension 1426. Office hours will be from 10:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. in Room 801A on the main campus.
Annual 'UVI Olympics' Slated for St. Croix Campus April 15-18
The annual weekend of "UVI Olympics" activities has been announced for the St. Croix campus on April 15 through 18. Thirty St. Thomas campus students have accepted the challenge and plan to compete against St. Croix campus counterparts. Events will include co-ed softball, basketball, tennis, flag football, track, tennis, pool, dominoes and volleyball. 4-H Troupe to Participate in Junior Queen and King of the Band Competition
The UVI Cooperative Extension Service invites the entire university family to support its 2004 4-H Carnival Troupe. Troupe members Monetricke Olive and Kahleed Blyden will compete for the 2004 Junior Queen and King of the Band competition at 8 p.m. Wednesday, April 21, at Lionel Roberts Stadium. This is the second year the troupe has participated in the Junior Queen and King competitions. Between 35 and 50 youngsters are expected to participate in this year's 4-H Carnival Troupe.
St. Croix Campus Student Awards Program for April 24
The 30th Annual Student Awards program on the St. Croix campus is scheduled for 6 p.m. Saturday, April 24, in the cafetorium. The program will recognize academic achievement, scholarship, service and student leadership. This is a formal event and heavy hors d'oeuvres will be served. St. Thomas Campus Academic Awards Program Set for May 6
The 2004 Academic Awards program on UVI's St. Thomas campus is scheduled for 6 p.m. Thursday, May 6, at the Sports and Fitness Center. The program will honor top students in each grade level and include the presentation of major scholarships. A reception will follow. Friends of V.I. National Park Extend Scholarship Application Deadline
The Friends of V.I. National Park group has extended the application period to April 30 for a scholarship program it is offering for college students in the Virgin Islands. Two scholarships are available to Virgin Islanders entering either their junior or senior year at accredited universities with a major in a field related to natural resource management. UVI Staff Council to Meet Tuesday, April 27
The next meeting of the UVI Staff Council is scheduled for Tuesday, April 27, at noon. The session will be videoconferenced in Chase Auditorium (Business Education room 110) on the St. Thomas campus and in the Theater (Evans Center room 401) on St. Croix campus. UVI Nursing Students to Display Posters at Tutu Park Mall on April 28
UVI Bachelor of Nursing Science students will present a poster display on injury prevention among children in the center court of the Tutu Park Mall from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Wednesday, April 28. The goal of this project is to expand knowledge of injury prevention while promoting preventative health as an essential component of childcare. Posters will be displayed on a wide range of topics including stranger danger, sun safety, safety around animals, choking prevention, first aid and car seat safety. Golden Key Induction Ceremony Set for May 4 on St. Croix
The UVI St. Thomas and St. Croix campus chapters of the Golden Key International Honor Society are celebrating their 10th anniversaries this year. An induction ceremony and dinner for the St. Croix campus chapter will be held at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, May 4, at the Carambola Beach Resort. Fifteen new members are scheduled to be inducted. Everyone who plans to attend the induction and dinner must RSVP by April 23 to chapter adviser Miriam Osborne-Elliott at 692-4187. To become a member of the society students must have a minimum grade point average of 3.3.
Seventeen students were inducted into St. Thomas campus Golden Key chapter on April 4.
Mathematics Skills Exams Set May 7 on St. Thomas
The final exam for students taking Mathematics Skills classes on the St. Thomas campus is scheduled for 3 to 5 p.m. May 7 in the CA Building. For more information call 693-1253. The final exam schedule for St. Croix campus students will be announced when it becomes available.
