GENERAL EDUCATIONAL DEVELOPMENT EXAMS SET

April 10, 2004 – The General Educational Development exam, better known as the GED, will be administered Thursday and Friday on St. Thomas and April 20 and 21 on St. Croix, the Education Department announced this week.
The nationally administered exam takes seven hours and is given over two days.
Locally, the exam fee is $40, and it must be paid by money order made out to Government of the Virgin islands, according to a release issued by the department.
Candidates must take and pass the two-hour GED Pre-Test in order to become eligible to take the GED exam itself, the release states. There is a $25 fee to take the pre-test, which covers reading, English and math, and payment again must be by money order made out to the government.
The GED Testing Service, which provides the GED exams nationwide, "has recently undergone an upgrade," the release states. "Reflective in this upgrade is an increase in the cost of booklets, testing materials, testing fees and fees charged to sponsoring programs in order to maintain testing sites," as well as fees for personnel services. Thus, "local exam fees have had to be raised n order to continue providing this program."
Applicants must be at least 16 years old and must register in advance to take either the pre-test or the GED exam. Registration may be done weekdays between 8:30 a.m. and 5 p.m. at the following locations:
St. Thomas — the Education Department "State Office," located on Crystal Gade across from the Board of Elections office.
St. Croix – the Vocational-Technical and Adult Education Office located on the campus of Theodora Dunbavin School.
St. John — Julius E. Sprauve School.
Anna L. Lewis, local GED administrator and the director of the territory's vocational-technical and adult education programs, noted that candidates had complained of having to wait a long time to get their test booklets. "The delay was caused by complications in processing the department's purchase order," she said. She added: "I anticipate our new and improved system for processing documents will expedite future purchases and eliminate any recurrence of … delays."
