UVI Summer Science Enrichment Academies Seeking Interested Students
Positions for more than 100 Virgin Islands students in grades 7 through 12 are available in the 2004 Summer Science Enrichment Academies program to be hosted by UVI. Applications are available from school guidance counselors. The sign-up is April 23. For more information contact Judy Boland at 693-1232, or Catherine Schlingmann at 693-1383 on St. Thomas or Dr. Michelle Peterson at 778-1620, Ext. 3141, on St. Croix. Miss UVI Featured in Ebony Magazine
Miss UVI 2003-2004, Alba Harrigan, is featured in the April edition of Ebony Magazine, along with other queens from Historically Black Colleges and Universities.
Class Schedules for Summer, Fall 2004 Terms Posted on UVI Web Site
Class schedules for UVI's summer and fall 2004 terms are now available on the UVI Web site. The schedules, along with other important information, are available under the Academics section of the UVI Web site (see link below).
Advisement, Registration for Fall 2004 Continues Through April 14
UVI will conduct advisement and registration of continuing students for the Fall 2004 semester from April 5 through Wednesday, April 14. Following advisement, returning UVI students can register via the Internet from anywhere beginning April 5 through Friday, April 23. To register online students must first visit advisors for approval of course selections. They obtain a Personal Identification Number (PIN) and then go on-line at banweb.uvi.edu to register.
Monthly Newsletter dateline UVI Now Available on UVI Web site
Latest edition of dateline:UVI is now available on the UVI Web site. This issue of the monthly newsletter features pictures and articles from such recent UVI activities as Charter Week and Afternoon on the Green.
First UVI Carnival Troupe Meeting Set for April 6
The first meeting of the UVI Carnival troupe will be from 5 to 7 p.m. on Tuesday, April 6, at the Dining Pavilion on the St. Thomas campus. Costumes will be on display. Students, staff, faculty, alumni, friends and supporters are encouraged to join. The cost is $100 for students and $150 for all others. This covers the cost of the costume, a T-shirt, and food and drinks along the parade route. Troupe practice will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Dining Pavilion every Tuesday, Thursday and Friday until the adults' parade. UVI's theme for the 2004 St. Thomas Carnival adults parade entry is "Knowledge, Culture and More for Carnival 2004." To register via e-mail interested persons should send name, telephone number and waist, hip and bust size to carnival@uvi.edu. To sign up by telephone, call 693-1140. You may also view the costumes or sign up at onlineonline.
Monet Davis to Perform Junior Recital on April 8
Clarinetist Monet I. Davis will perform her junior recital at 12:15 p.m. Thursday, April 8, in the choir room on UVI's St. Thomas campus. Davis' accompanist will be Dr. Lorna Young-Wright. The recital will be presented by the music area of UVI's humanities division. The public is invited. Admission is free.
Seminar on Grant Writing Basics Set by SBDC on St. Thomas on April 8
A seminar on grant writing basics will be offered by UVI's Small Business Development Center from 9 a.m. to noon on Thursday, April 8, on St. Thomas. Titled "Grant Writing Basics: Funding Sources Identification and Proposal Development," the seminar will be presented by Diana Demers, director of the UVI Office of Sponsored Programs.
Pre-registration is required. Admission to the seminar is $20. A $5 discount is offered to individuals who pre-register by 4:30 p.m. on uesday, April 6. The seminar is free for UVI faculty, staff and students, but they must pre-register. The session will take place at the SBDC training facility at Nisky Center. UVI Easter Recess Set April 9-11
The St. Croix and St. Thomas campuses of UVI will be closed Friday and Saturday, April 9 and 10, for Easter recess. Classes will resume and University offices will reopen on the regular schedule Monday, April 12.
Free Tax Filing Help Offered on St. Thomas Campus
Free tax filing assistance will be provided at the UVI St. Thomas campus from 1 to 5 p.m. on Saturday, April 10, and Sunday, April 11, in the Classroom Administration Building computer lab, Room 103. The Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Project, sponsored by the St. Thomas campus business division, aims to help community members prepare income tax returns. The tax-filing assistance will be provided by UVI business students and professors using Turbo Tax, an online tax filing system. For more information call Professor Sharon Simmons at 693-1314.
Student Government Association Elections Set April 14 on St. Thomas
The Student Government Association on UVI's St. Thomas campus will hold election for the 2004-2005 school year on Wednesday, April 14. Applicants are being recruited for the following position: president, vice president, treasurer, and senators (three seniors, three juniors and three sophomores).
Thursday, April 8, is the deadline for sign-up. For applications and more information call the student activities office at extension 1111. Faculty and staff are asked to encourage eligible students to participate.
UVI Annual Olympics Slated for St. Croix Campus April 15-18
The annual weekend of UVI Olympics activities has been announced for the St. Croix campus on April 15 through 18. Thirty St. Thomas campus students have accepted the challenge and plan to compete against St. Croix campus counterparts. Events will include co-ed softball, basketball, tennis, flag football, track, tennis, pool, dominoes and volleyball. For more information contact the student activities offices on St. Thomas at 693-1111 or on St. Croix at 692-4188.
UVI Little Theatre Offers Spring Production April 16-19
The UVI Little Theatre Production for the spring semester will be "The Night Thoreau Spent In Jail." Written by Jerome Lawrence and Robert E. Lee, this historical yet believably current play is about the night Thoreau was thrown in jail in 1846 for non-payments of taxes. The play will feature members of the community as well as UVI students. Show dates are April 16, 17, 18 and 19. Show time is 8 p.m. Tickets are $12 for adults and $6 for students. The UVI Little Theatre is located in the Classroom Administration Building on the St. Thomas campus. Call 693-1354 for details.
UVI Staff Council to Meet Tuesday, April 27
The next meeting of the UVI Staff Council is scheduled for Tuesday, April 27, at noon. The session will be videoconferenced in Chase Auditorium (Business Education room 110) on the St. Thomas campus and in the Theater (Evans Center room 401) on St. Croix campus.
SBDC Offers Personal Development Workshops in April
The Small Business Development Center will conduct the following seminars during the month of April. For more information or to register for any of these seminars, contact UVI-SBDC at 692-5270. All seminars will be at the UVI SBDC Training Center located in the Sunshine Mall (lower level) St. Croix.
* Coping with Unemployment: What to Do When You Are Out of Work (Goal-setting strategies, successful coping techniques, and realistic jobhunting tips)" – Thursday, April 15, from 1-3 p.m. Admission is free.
* Time Management: Getting the Most Out of Your Day" – Thursday, April 22, from 5:45-8 p.m. Admission $15 with pre-registration ($20 at the door).
* Financial Management: The Need for Disability Insurance and Proper< br>Business Planning" – Tuesday, April 27 from 5:45-8 p.m. Admission $15 with pre-registration ($20 at the door).
Mathematics Skills Exams Set May 7 on St. Thomas
The final exam for students taking mathematics skills classes on the St.
Thomas campus is scheduled for 3 to 5 p.m. on May 7. The exam will be offered in the CA Building. For more information call 693-1253. Details of the final exam for students taking mathematics skills class on the St. Croix campus will be announced as soon as available.
