TRANSFER DAY EVENTS SET FOR WEDNESDAY

March 30, 2004 — Commemoration of the 87th anniversary of the transfer of the Danish West Indies to the United States will be conducted on the island of St. Croix on Wednesday, March 31, under the joint sponsorship of the St. Croix Friends of Denmark Society, the St. Croix Landmarks Society, and Our Town Frederiksted.
The event will be held at the Lawaetz Family Museum and is scheduled to start at 10 a.m. The ceremony will be dedicated to Wilford Pedro, on the occasion of his 100th birthday, as well as to pay special recognition to all quelbe musicians in the Virgin Islands.
The Carl and Marie Lawaetz Museum is the ancestral home of the Lawaetz family since the 1890s and is filled with West Indian furnishings and surrounded by historic ruins and tropical gardens maintained by the St. Croix Landmarks Society.
On Wednesday, Gov. Charles W. Turnbull will be on hand to deliver remarks relative to the longstanding initiatives between the Kingdom of Denmark and the U.S. Virgin Islands, resulting from the 1999 bilateral agreement for the surveying, preservation and arranging of the records of the Danish West Indian period, which are housed in Denmark, Washington, D.C., and here in the territory, respectively.
On St. Thomas the transfer will be observed with a flag-raising ceremony scheduled to begin at 11:30 a.m. with a musical prelude by the 73rd Army Band on the grounds of the Virgin Islands Legislature, followed by the lowering of the Danish flag and the raising of the Stars and Stripes.
Lt. Gov. Vargrave Richards will represent the administration and the Charlotte Amalie Junior ROTC is also expected to participate. The public is invited to attend these events.
