March 14, 2004 — Sir Fitzroy R. Augier, professor emeritus of History at the University of the West Indies, Jamaica, will be the guest lecturer at the 2004 Isaac Dookhan Memorial Lecture, hosted by the University of the Virgin Islands Social Sciences Division. Augier will present on the topic, "Ever Closer Union: History and Politics of the Caribbean."
His lecture will be held on the St. Thomas campus at 7 p.m. Thursday, March 18, in the Classroom Administration Building, room 303.
A St. Croix campus presentation of the lecture will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, March 19, in the Evans Center Theater, room 401.
Augier, who was born on St. Lucia, was instrumental in establishing Caribbean history as part of the curriculum in secondary schools of the region. He co-authored the text book, "The Making of the West Indies," and "The Rastafarian Report."
Augier was actively involved with other Caribbean historians in founding and sustaining the Association of Caribbean Historians and subsequently became its president. He later became a member of the Caribbean Examinations Council.
Augier's exemplary work has been recognized internationally, and he has been knighted by the Queen of England.
