March 8, 2004 – The University of the Virgin Islands Bulletin Board issued today has these announcements:

Spring Recess at UVI Continues Through March 14
UVI's Spring Recess began March 8 and continues through Sunday, March 14. Classes will resume on Monday, March 15.
Space Available in American Sign Language Class on St. Thomas
Space is still available in a class in American Sign Language – Level 1 – that is being offered by the V.I. University Center for Excellence in Developmental Disabilities on the St. Thomas campus. Course sessions began March 3 and will continue through June. This is an enrichment class and not for academic credit. It is open to anyone interested in learning sign language. The cost is $125 per semester.
Stephanie Brown is the instructor. Classes are held from 5:45 to 7:15 p.m. on Wednesdays and Fridays. To register or obtain more information, visit the VIUCEDD office in the Teacher Education Building (Room T-106) or call 693-1188 as soon as possible.
UVI Staff Council Cancels March Meeting; Next Session to be Held in April
The scheduled March 9th meeting of the UVI Staff Council has been canceled. The Staff Council will hold its next meeting in April. The date is still to be determined. The meeting will be videoconferenced between Chase Auditorium on the St. Thomas campus and the Theater on the St. Croix campus. For details call 693-1111. St. Thomas Faculty-Staff Regalia Order Deadline is March 9
Members of the faculty and professional staff on St. Thomas who need to order regalia in order to participate in commencement (set at 5 p.m. on Saturday, May 22) must place orders with the UVI Bookstore no later than March 9. An order form is available on the "Latest Links" section of the UVI Web site.
UVI Scholarship Applications for 2004-05 Now Available
UVI scholarships applications for the 2004-05 school year are now available for high school, undergraduate and graduate students. Applications can be obtained at the financial aid offices on the St. Thomas and St. Croix campuses. Applications and the required letter of recommendation are to be returned to the aid offices no later than the scholarship deadline, which is 4 p.m. on Friday, April 2. UVI Volleyball On-Tap at Sports & Fitness Center March 10 and 12
The UVI men's and women's volleyball teams will showcase their talent this week with games on Wednesday and Friday, March 10 and 12, at the UVI Sports and Fitness Center. UVI will host Rivier College, from New Hampshire, on Wednesday and Friday at the Sports and Fitness Center. The Rivier squad is ranked sixth in the nation among NCAA Division III schools. The Lady Bucs will take on SWV Club (Sisters Who Volley) from St. Thomas Power League on Wednesday, and will battle Full Force Club on Friday evening. Admission is free and students, faculty and staff are encouraged to come out and support the student athletes. Game time each night is 7:30 p.m.
The UVI men's team will see action again on March 20 and 23 when the University of Maryland Volleyball Club visits. The UVI men are currently in first place and the women are in second place in the St. Thomas/St. John Power League. Power League matches are played at the Charlotte Amalie High School gym at 7:30 p.m. on Fridays and at 1:30 p.m. on Sundays
UVI Team Attending Caribbean Inter-Collegiate Debating Competition
A debate team from the St. Thomas campus is representing UVI this week in the 14th Annual Caribbean Inter-Collegiate Debating Competition in Trinidad. Team members are Latashia Joseph, Ivan Connor, Hadiyah Silcott, Bernard Blyden and Amarae Blyden Richards. Professor Gene Emanuel is the adviser. The competition is scheduled for March 11 through 15.
Office of Registrar Schedules "Web for Faculty" Training Sessions
UVI's office of the registrar is inviting all members of the UVI teaching staff to one of its upcoming "Web for Faculty" training sessions. The training consists of instruction in the use of the online student database to access up-to-the-minute class listings and student information. It also includes the ability to enter final grades via the Internet. Participants are asked to indicate the session they plan to attend by sending an e-mail to kdawson@uvi.edu. In the subject line, enter only the word "Training," and in the body, indicate name, campus and session. Individuals may also call the Registrar's Office to reserve attendance. Training sessions will begin promptly at the listed time and will be conducted on the following days listed below. For more information, contact the Registrar's Office at 693-1160 or 693-1164.

Second Spring Research Symposium Set March 20 on St. Croix
UVI's Second Annual Spring Research Symposium is scheduled for 1 to 4 p.m. on Saturday, March 20, at the Student Center on the St. Croix campus. The works of approximately 20 participants in UVI's Emerging Caribbean Scientist scholars program will be on display. The scholars are UVI students from the St. Croix and St. Thomas campuses who work directly with faculty members on various research projects. UVI's Division of Science and Mathematics is asking V.I. high school teachers to encourage their students to attend the symposium. For more information call 692-4150.

St. Croix Campus Activities
— Friday, March 19 — Queen Mary 5K Walk/Run – Help celebrate UVI Charter Day. Course starts at Kmart "West" and ends on St. Croix campus. For details call 692-4110.
— Saturday, March 27 — UVI Spring Banquet and Ball – The 13th annual Spring Banquet and Ball will be held on the St. Croix campus. Tickets are $25 per person and $30 per couple.
SBDC Sets Business Counseling Series March 8 through 12 on St. Thomas
UVI's Small Business Development Center on St. Thomas has announced its 2004 Business Counseling Series will run from Monday, March 8, through Friday, March 12. The series is designed to provide prospective and existing business owners with effective planning, management tools, best practices information, preventive measures and helpful hints on business principles. The following topics will be presented in separate morning and afternoon sessions at the SBDC's conference room, at Nisky Center. All sessions will be offered from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. and repeated from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. on the specified days.
— March 8: Personal Credit/Effective Money Management
— March 9: Tips for Effectively Interviewing, Selecting, and Managing Your Employees
— March 10: Innovative Advertising/Marketing Techniques
— March 11: Writing and Implementing an Effective Business Plan

isting Business Owners

Seminar on QuickBooks Pro 2001 Offered March 9 by SBDC on St. Croix
UVI's Small Business Development Center will conduct a seminar entitled "Discovering QuickBooks Pro 2001" from 6 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday, March 9, at the SBDC training center located in Sunshine Mall (lower level) on St. Croix.
Admission for those who pre-register is $15. Registration at the door is $20. Admission is free for UVI employees and students, but pre-registration is requested. Space in this seminar is limited. To secure a space, registration fee must be received by Friday, March 5. For more information or to register, contact UVI-SBDC at 692-5270.
