Feb. 19, 2004 – A court in Road Town, Tortola, sentenced two St. Thomas men to prison terms Wednesday after they pleaded guilty to drug, gun and burglary charges.
Hiram Abiff, 26, of Estate Mariendahl pleaded guilty to possession of 10 pounds of marijuana, a 38-caliber revolver and ammunition. He was sentenced to three years in prison.
Shaheed Abiff, whose address and age were not immediately available, was sentenced to one year in prison after pleading guilty to burglary and criminal damage.
Authorities said police seized the drugs on Feb. 9 after searching a Road Town hotel room where the men were staying and found the gun and ammunition later while searching Hiram Abiff.
Police also linked the men to a break-in the night of Feb. 8 at Maria's by the Sea, a Road Town hotel.
Three other St. Thomas men were initially arrested and charged in connection with the drugs. But charges against Vernal Jamal Stevens, 21, of Contant; Leburn Smith, 27, of Estate Thomas; and Royston Carey, 23, no address available, were dropped after Hiram and Shaheed Abiff enter guilty pleas on Feb. 13.
Magistrate Gail Charles ordered the Abiffs held in custody until Wednesday's sentencing date.
Tortola authorities also dropped charges in connection with the case against two Tortola women, Alexis Lettsome, 18, and Kimesha Adams, 17, both of Long Bay, Tortola.
