PISTARCKLE FUND-RAISER SETS 'THE NERD' TO DINNER

Feb. 18, 2004 – For its annual fund-raiser event on Saturday night, Pistarckle Theater on St. Thomas is presenting a two-act comedy, "The Nerd," in a dinner theater format — replete with champagne reception before dinner, a silent auction, and more champagne with the cast and director after the show.
Tickets are $100, and proceeds will go to support the not-for-profit company's 2004 Children's Summer Camp.
"The Nerd," written by Larry Shue, is "a side-splitting comedy about an architect whose life gets turned upside down when an old war buddy shows up," according to Pistarckle publicity.
Well, not exactly war buddy, but both served in Vietnam, where Willum Cubbert was seriously wounded and Rick Steadman saved his life. Other than that, the two have never met, but Cubbert, the architect, has written Steadman saying that for the rest of his life "you will have somebody on Earth who will do anything for you."
And at Cubbert's 34th birthday party in Terre Haute, Ind., Steadman shows up unannounced to put that pledge to the test. At first Cubbert is delighted, but Steadman turns out to be the houseguest from Hell — a nerd with no social sense, little intelligence and less tact — and he shows no interest in leaving.
The cast consists of Jonn Jorgensen (who directed Pistarckle's mounting of "I Hate Hamlet" a year ago and of "Rumors" the season before that), Alison Steir, Trey Thomas, Alex Emerich, A.J. Stone, Leigh Goldman and Mo Stanton.
Things get under way at 6:30 p.m. with the reception at the Pistarckle facility in Tillett Gardens. "We'll be up to some antics, to get ready for a great time," Pistarckle producing artistic director Nicola Emerich says.
After Saturday night's event, there will be regular theater performances of "The Nerd" on Feb. 27-28, March 4-6 and March 11-13.
There's be a door prize at Saturday night's event of tickets to three Pistarckle play readings coming up in the next few weeks, under Jorsensen's direction:
– "Eleemosynary" on Feb. 24.
– "Artichoke" on March 2.
– "Strange Snow" or "Private Eyes" on March 9.
All readings also will take place at the Pistarckle facility, all beginning at 8 p.m.
To reserve tickets for Saturday's fund raiser and to obtain ticket information about the upcoming play presentations and readings, call the Pistarckle office at 775-7877.
