Feb. 14, 2004 – The United Way of St. Thomas-St. John will hold its annual Bazaar and Flea Market on Saturday, Feb. 21, at the American Legion Hall in Sub Base
A favorite stop-and-shop destination, this event features the sale of previously owned household goods, toys, books, CDs, furniture, electronic equipment, clothing, jewelry and accessories at bargain prices. This year, United Way executive director Thyra Hammond said, there will also be new clothing, donations promised by two stores at least two stores. United Way will be accepting more donations through Thursday and Friday, so there's no telling what other surprises may be in store.
Items they're still specially seeking include CDs, videos, and audio books. Books are also welcomed, as United Way donates leftovers to the Friends of the St. Thomas Public Libraries for further recirculation.
United Way's member agencies will also be on hand, selling local food and drinks, native sweets, hot dogs and hamburgers under the "Food Court" tent. In past years, Maxine Comissiong's kallaloo has been much in demand, at the Reformed Church's sales spot. Other agencies will sell plants, provide entertainment and music, and be available to explain their service programs.
The event goes on from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., and during that time you might hear from sound man Charles Lynch; the Youth In Action Downstreet group, who are writing a poem about United Way, setting it to music and performing it; a Legal Services attorney on saxophone with a friend who sings; and maybe a steel band.
In addition to the bargains, with every $10 purchase participants are eligible for raffle prizes that will be drawn every 30 minutes all day. Raffle prizes include gift certificates for stores and restaurants, and more.
"This is always a fun-filled day," Debra Watlington, event chairperson, said in a release, "with all the monies raised going to support United Way's 16 member agencies."
She added that the value of items donated to the United Way for the Flea Market is tax deductible. To donate goods to the Flea Market or to volunteer to assist with the event, call the United Way office at 774-3185.
