UVI Carnival 2004 Floupe Plans Announced; Participants Sought
The UVI community engagement committee is excited about this year's floupe
entry in the V.I. Carnival Parade. The committee has adopted a theme that reflects the V.I. Carnival Committee's "Through a Cultural Door for Carnival 2004" theme. The UVI floupe's theme is: "Knowledge, Culture and More for UVI Carnival 2004." The concept is to have a UVI float depicting the brain (symbolizing intellect) and costumes connected to three cultures that contributed to present-day knowledge in the Virgin Islands and Caribbean region – African, Taino Indian and Greco-Roman.
Costume prices are expected to be in the range of about $100. Costume sketches will be displayed on-line and on posters by Wednesday, Feb. 11. Sign-up for St. Thomas students will take place in the office of student affairs on St. Thomas and in the Chancellor's office for faculty/staff. The floupe would be enhanced by the participation of St. Croix students, staff and faculty. Further information about St. Croix sign-up sheets will be made available later this week. For further information, please call Cherie Wheatley at 693-1541.

UVI Little Theater Issues Casting Call for Spring Production
The UVI Little Theater, on the St. Thomas campus, has issued a casting call for actors in its upcoming spring production of "The Night Thoreau Spent in Jail." Auditions are scheduled from 7 to 9 pm. on Feb. 11 and 12, with callbacks on Feb. 13. UVI Speech and Theater Professor Dennis Parker, the director, has roles for approximately 10 men and four women. Persons interested in auditioning for the play should visit the Little Theater, located on the second floor of the Classroom Administration building on the evenings of the casting call.
"The Night Thoreau Spent in Jail" is one of the most widely produced plays of our time. Written by Jerome Lawrence and Robert E. Lee, the play explores a mystical experience of one of America's most influential thinkers during a night spent in jail for refusing to pay taxes in support of what he felt was an unjust war. Thoreau's night in jail led to his famous essay "Civil Disobedience." This essay had a profound influence on Mahatma Gandhi and Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
