Jan. 20, 2004 — The Virgin Islands Pace Runners held the 19th Annual Martin Luther King Memorial 25K Run on Sunday morning. The event served to recognize the slain civil rights leader who fought against oppression and worked for world peace.
The route for the run began near historic Fort Christiansvaern, where slaves from Africa were unloaded from ships, and traveled along west routes to Fort Frederik where nearby all slaves in the Danish West Indies were declared free.
The runners covered the 15.5-mile course between two and three hours. Delegate to Congress Donna M. Christensen supported the event with the signing a special certificate presented to each runner.
The female participants were: Earthla Arthur, Theresa Harper, Jo Shim, Louise Stapleton, and Rachel Witty.
The male participants were: Kent Bradbury, Will Franks, Leopold Fredericks, Douglas Inman, George Jules, Stuart Ketcham, Gabrial Webber, Larry Williams, Marlon Williams, and Wallace Williams.
