May 13, 2003 – The V.I. Track and Field Federation announced this week that Lisah Hamilton of St. Croix is just a few seconds from qualifying for the Pan American Games 10-kilometer event and is considering moving up to the marathon.
As a child, Hamilton was a swimmer with the St. Croix Dolphins and teammate of Trischa and Tim Duncan. She represented the Virgin Islands in Cuba, Curaçao, Santo Domingo, Puerto Rico, Costa Rica, and other places. At Widner University in Chester, Pa., she was on the swim team and decided to give cross-country a try while waiting for swim season. She ran cross-country for four years and place fifth in the Middle Atlantic Conference Championships.
Hamilton continued to run after college and was a member of the V.I. National Cross-Country Team in 1990 when the championships were held in St. Croix and in 2003 in Acapulco as a member of the team that won bronze medal and third place (see photo). She was a member of the V.I. National Team at the Central America and Caribbean Games in Venezuela and competed in the World Cross-Country Championships in Lausanne, Switzerland, in March of this year. On April 19 she won the Organ Donor Awareness 10k race in Philadelphia with a time of 36 minutes 49 seconds, just a few seconds off the qualifying time for the Pan Am Games 10k. There were 353 male and female runners in the race and she was second overall. On April 26 she took second in the Narberth, Pa. 5-mile run in 29 minutes 54 seconds. All of her times are V.I. national records, pending verification.
Hamilton plans to run the 10k in the Pan Am Games. She has express interest in qualifying for the marathon as well.
After receiving her undergraduate degree from Widner, she received a master's in business administration from West Chester University in Pennsylvania and is currently teaching business and information technology courses at colleges and universities as well as office productivity applications to training centers and corporations. She designs Web sites and develops application-training materials.
